Market Overview:
The global power transformers market is expected to grow from USD XX million in 2018 to USD XX million by 2030, at a CAGR of X.X%. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for alternative power generation and smart grid applications, and the growing traction for electric vehicles (EVs). The global power transformers market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market is divided into single-stage transformers, two-stage transformers, three-stage transformers. On the basis of application, it is classified into alternative power generation (wind turbines and solar photovoltaic systems), smart grid applications (transmission & distribution management systems and substation automation), traction locomotives (electric multiple units [EMUs] and diesel locomotives), EV charging stations.
Product Definition:
A power transformer is a transformer that is used to transfer electrical power from one circuit to another, usually at different voltage levels. The importance of power transformers lies in their ability to convert AC voltages and currents from one level to another while maintaining the same frequency.
Single-Stage:
Single-stage transformers are used in power transformer applications where primary voltage is greater than or equal to 230VAC and secondary voltage is less than or equal to 860VAC. Single-stage transformers have only one winding which helps in reducing the number of windings, core material, turns ratio and overall height. The shorter the height of a single-stage transformer, the fewer chances there are of it getting overweight and overheating.
Two-Stage:
Two-stage transformers are used in power transformer applications where primary and secondary windings have different voltage levels. The two-stage transformer has a ratio of turns ratio between primary and secondary winding that is 3:1, 4:1, 5:1 or 6:1.
The Two-Stage Transformer (TST) helps to improve the efficiency of power transformers by reducing the number of turns in transmission lines leading to an overall reduction in energy losses during transformation.
Application Insights:
The application segment is segregated into alternative power generation, smart grid, traction locomotives and electric vehicles charging. The alternative power generation segment dominated the global market in 2017 and this trend is anticipated to continue over the forecast period. This growth can be attributed to growing demand for electricity generated from fossil fuels such as coal and gas among others in countries such as China, India and Japan.
The smart grid application segment is also expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing penetration of transformers with high efficiency ratings that are designed specifically for use with low-voltage AC grids used primarily in urban areas. These products are also being increasingly deployed at railway stations, airports lounges and hotels across various regions due to increased consumer spending on luxury amenities which has resulted in a rise in overall product demand globally over recent years.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to be the largest regional market over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for alternative power generation and traction electric locomotives. The growing industrialization in emerging countries, such as China, India, and Japan is also anticipated to drive the APAC region’s growth. Furthermore, rising investments in renewable energy infrastructure are projected to fuel industry expansion over the coming years.
The European market was valued at USD X billion in 2017 and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing high consumption of transformers for EV charging applications across several countries including Germany, France Italy among others. Moreover Europe has been one of the early adopters of EVs with more than 25 million households having an EV charging station installed by 2020 according Eurelectricity data sheet 2016/2017 (accessed on 27th April 2018).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for electricity due to population growth and industrialization in developing countries
- Rapid urbanization and electrification in rural areas
- Expansion of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power
- Replacement of aging infrastructure
- Development of smart grids
