Market Overview:
The global feeding insects market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for protein-rich food sources, growing awareness about the nutritional benefits of feeding insects, and rising concerns about food safety. The global feeding insects market is segmented by type into black soldier flies, common housefly larvae, silkworms, yellow mealworms, and others. The black soldier fly segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global market in 2018. This segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. The common housefly larvae segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. The global feeding insects market is also divided by application into poultry, livestock, fish farming and others (including pet food). Poultry accounted for majority share in 2017 and it will continue its dominance over other applications due high consumption rates across all regions studied in this research study except Latin America where livestock sector will dominate owing higher per capita meat consumption rates as compared with poultry sector . Fish farming application will witness highest growth rate globally due increase in aquaculture production which would subsequently increase demand for feed ingredients including insect meal/protein.
Product Definition:
Feeding Insects is the process of providing food to insects. This is an important process as it helps the insects survive and grow.
Black Soldier Flies:
Black soldier fly, also known as black soldier fly or vinegar fly is a type of insect in the family Stratiomyidae. It's size can vary from 2-3 mm to 10 cm for males and females are about 3/4th the size. The adult insects live for about two months and during that time they can lay up to 200 eggs which hatch after three weeks into larvae that look like miniature versions of the adults.
Common Housefly Larvae:
The common housefly larva is the developmental stage of the house fly. It is a white, maggot-like larvae which lives in the walls of residential and commercial buildings. The presence of moisture and temperature conditions are favorable for its development. During its development, it consumes waste material such as dead animals, meat & bone meal along with human excreta including dung cakes and urine & feces.
Application Insights:
Poultry was the largest application segment in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. Poultry farming is one of the most important sectors contributing to overall GDP in many countries worldwide. The sector has witnessed significant growth over recent years as a result of increasing consumption of animal-based products including meat, eggs and dairy products among others. Feeding insects have proven beneficial for poultry as they provide natural sources of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fatty acids which are essential for maintaining good health in layers, ducks & geese and turkeys among other birds.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The U.S., as a major poultry producer, is expected to remain a key consumer of insects for feed production over the forecast period. However, stringent regulations by environmental agencies such as EPA and FDA regarding hygiene and food safety are anticipated to act as a restraint for the market growth in North America during the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is estimated to be one of the fastest-growing regions with China being its largest contributor on account of rising consumption levels in this country owing to growing domestic demand coupled with increasing exports from other countries such as India.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing awareness about the benefits of feeding insects as a source of protein for humans and animals
- Growing demand from the food industry for insect-based ingredients and products
- Rising popularity of edible insects as a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional livestock farming practices
- Proliferation of small-scale insect farming operations in response to growing consumer demand
- Development of new technologies and innovations that make it easier to breed, process, and consume insects
