Market Overview:
The global coal gasification market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing demand for fuel gas, feedstock, and power generation across the globe. In addition, the growing fertilizer and chemical industry is also fueling the growth of the coal gasification market. The global coal gasification market can be segmented on the basis of type into moving bed, fluidized bed, entrained bed, and molten bed. The moving bed segment is expected to hold a major share in the global coal gasification market due to its high efficiency and low emissions. On the basis of application, the fuel gas segment accounted for majority share in 2017 owing to its growing demand for energy worldwide. However, the feedstock segmentis projectedto grow at a higher CAGR during forecast period as it offers various advantages such as lower capital investmentand easy operation&maintenanceas comparedto other applications segments .
Product Definition:
The process of converting coal into a combustible gas mixture, typically consisting of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, is called coal gasification. The resulting gas mixture can be used as a fuel for heating or powering internal combustion engines.
Moving Bed:
The moving bed is a gasification technology in which the solid feed is moved continuously with respect to the fluidized bed. The continuous movement of solid-liquid mixture results in high conversion efficiency and lower operating costs as compared to fixed bed technologies.
The major advantage of this technology over fixed-bed techniques is that it enables continuous control over several factors such as temperature, pressure, and reactant distribution resulting into higher conversion efficiency.
Fluidized Bed:
Fluidized bed is a device used in coal gasification for the conversion of solid to gaseous fuels. It consists of an open-ended steel pipe, which is partially filled with fluidized material and then connected to the flue gas outlet. The other end of this pipe is attached to a turbine or power generator.
Application Insights:
Based on the application, the global coal gasification market has been segmented into fuel gas, feedstock, power generation, and fertilizers. The feedstock application is expected to dominate over the forecast period owing to rising demand for coal as a source of energy in various industries such as steel making and chemicals. Feedstock applications accounted for a share of 37.3% in 2017 owing to its use as a raw material in manufacturing various industrial products including polymers & resins (UPS), ceramics & metals (CAD/CAM), semiconductors & electronics components (MCM), and machined parts etc.
The power generation segment is also anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period due largely to increasing government funding towards research pertaining towards renewable sources of energy including wind turbines.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global coal gasification market in terms of revenue with a share of over 60% in 2017. The region is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for natural gas as a fuel across various end-use industries. China, India, and Japan are some of the largest consumers of natural gas as a fuel across their respective countries. Growing industrialization coupled with an increase in energy requirements is anticipated to drive product demand from 2018 to 2030.
North America accounted for more than 10% market share owing to growing environmental concerns regarding carbon emissions and fossil fuels along with stringent government regulations on reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 comparedto 2005 levels which may hinder economic activity.
Europe was valued at USD X million in 2017.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for energy: The global population is growing at a rapid pace and the demand for energy is increasing along with it. Coal gasification is an efficient way to convert coal into fuel and meet the rising demand for energy.
- Stringent environmental regulations: Governments around the world are implementing stringent environmental regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Coal gasification helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by converting coal into fuel without burning it, making it a more environmentally friendly option than traditional coal-fired power plants.
- Availability of cheap natural gas: The availability of cheap natural gas has led some countries to phase out their support for coal-based power plants in favor of natural gas-based plants. However, with the rise in global temperatures and concerns about climate change, there is increasing interest in using cleaner forms of energy like coal gasification that do not contribute as much to climate change as traditional fossil fuels like oil and natural gases do.
