Direct (One Core) PST, also known as One-Core Phase Shift Transformer or OCPST, is a new transformer core technology developed by ABB. It was initially designed for wind power sector but has since been expanded to be used in various applications such as oil & gas and telecommunication too. The key advantage of this transformer core is that it can deliver high voltage with low current density which results in reduced energy losses during the process.
Indirect (Two Cores) PST:
The indirect (two cores) PST is used in phase shifting transformers (PST) to shift the phase of the AC input. The transformer core has two windings, one of which is connected to a low voltage side and the other to a high voltage side. As current flows through primary winding, it creates an electromagnetic field around secondary winding which induces a varying amount of AC power in secondary circuit.
