Product Definition:
Acute Lung Injury (ALI) is defined as a serious, and often life-threatening, problem that can occur when the lungs are injured. The most common cause of ALI is pneumonia, but other causes include: sepsis (a serious infection), near drowning, major trauma, and aspiration of vomit or food. Symptoms of ALI include shortness of breath, rapid breathing (tachypnea), coughing up blood (hemoptysis), chest pain, and fever. The importance of ALI lies in its ability to rapidly lead to respiratory failure and death if not treated aggressively.
