Market Overview:
The global industrial biomass boiler market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for renewable energy sources and the growing awareness about environment-friendly technologies. The global industrial biomass boiler market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market is segmented into wood deliverable, landfill residues, agricultural residues, and others (municipal solid waste [MSW], sewage sludge). The wood deliverable segment is expected to hold a major share in terms of revenue in 2018 owing to its high efficiency and low emissions as compared to other types of biomass boilers. However, landfill residues are projected to grow at a higher CAGR during the forecast period due to their increasing availability as a result of stringent regulations on waste disposal across regions. On the basis of application, pulp & paper industry accounted for majority share in 2017 owingto its high requirement for thermal energy across various stages such as pulping process heating steam requirements; drying; calendering; coating; sheeting/rolling processes etc., followed by brewery industry which uses large quantitiesof hot water (upwardsof 100°C)for brewing beerandwashingmalt grains .
Product Definition:
industrial biomass boiler is a kind of boiler which mainly burns biomass fuel, such as wood pellets, straw and other agricultural wastes. It has the features of high thermal efficiency, low pollution and convenient operation.
Wood Deliverable:
Wood deliverable is a by-product obtained during the manufacturing process of pulp and paper. It consists of cellulose fibers, hemicellulose, lignin and other impurities. Wood deliverable has been used as fuel in boilers for a long time now; however it is only recently that research has been carried out to determine its potential use as an alternative boiler feedstock.
Landfill Residues:
Landfill residues are the solid waste materials that are collected and stored in landfills or municipal waste landfills for a longer period of time. The boiler is used to process these materials into energy. These residual wastes consist of organic and inorganic compounds, metals, fibers, glass particles, rocks & soil among others.
The boiler uses the chemical reactions between fuel.
Application Insights:
Pulp and paper industry emerged as the leading application segment in terms of demand. The segment accounted for a market share of over 25% in 2017 owing to increasing demand for pulp and paper products across the globe. Biomass boiler is widely used in the pulp and paper industry on account of its ability to produce steam at relatively lower cost as compared to other sources such as fossil fuels or natural gas.
The use of biomass boilers has been further enhanced by their integration with Stirling engine driven heat recovery systems, which recycle waste heat into energy suitable for heating purposes. This combination results in high efficiency utilization while reducing overall costs associated with electricity generation, thereby enhancing their acceptance across various industries globally.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global industry with a revenue share of over 43% in 2017. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period as well, owing to increasing biomass availability and low cost. China is one of the largest producers and consumers of wood deliverable boiler fuel across this region. In addition, landfill residues are also widely used for producing energy across this region due to their availability at a lower cost as compared to other feedstock such as bagasse or grasses.
Europe accounted for more than 20% market share in terms of revenue in 2017 on account of growing demand from several industries including pulp & paper, brewery, power generation sector mainly in Germany and U.K.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for electricity due to population growth and industrialization in developing countries
- Stringent environmental regulations for thermal power plants that use fossil fuels
- Rising prices of traditional fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil
- Government subsidies and incentives for the deployment of renewable energy technologies
- Technological advancements that have led to the development of more efficient biomass boilers
