Market Overview:
The global MR fluid market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for MR fluids in automotive and robotics applications. Silicon oil is the most commonly used type of MR fluid, followed by mineral oil and others. In terms of application, the automotive segment accounts for the majority share of the global MR fluid market, followed by robotics and others. North America dominates the global MR fluid market, followed by Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America.
Product Definition:
MR fluid is a type of viscous fluid, typically made of a hydrocarbon oil and water, which has been modified with a polymer. The primary benefit of MR fluids is their ability to change their viscosity on demand in response to an external magnetic field. This makes them very useful for damping or absorbing vibrations and shocks, as well as for other applications that require precise control over the flow of liquids.
Silicon oil:
Silicon oil is a type of mineral oil which has been treated to remove impurities. It is used as an insulating medium in magnetic fluid (MRF) storage tanks and for transportation of MRF in heaters and reactors. Silicon oils are also used as lubricants for the production of ferromagnetic fluids such as demagnetized liquid silicon, magnetron sputtering targets, etc.
Mineral oil:
Mineral oil is a colorless, tasteless, odorless liquid that is extracted from various sources including coal tar and shale. It has been used as an MR fluid (MRF) additive in the past but with recent technological advancements it can be used as an effective substitute for other additives such as surfactants or solvents. Mineral oil acts as a carrier for other ingredients to mix with tissue-repairing chemicals during the manufacturing process of medical devices.
Application Insights:
Automotive was the largest application segment in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. Automotive MRFs are used for lubrication of various components including engine, transmission, powertrain and drive train. The growing automotive industry across the globe is anticipated to have a positive impact on market growth.
The robotics segment held a significant share in 2016 owing to increasing demand from industrial robots used in manufacturing industries such as electronics, pharmaceuticals and food processing among others. These robots require precision machined parts with high-quality surfaces that are easy to clean, which makes MRF an ideal solution for cleaning robot parts without any damage caused by abrasive particles or fluids. Moreover, increasing investments by companies such as SAGEM Technologies (former Schneider Electric), ABB Ltd., KAIST Co., LTD., YASKAWA Europe GmbH & Co KGaA among others will fuel industry expansion further driving demand over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to the presence of major industry participants and well-established automotive sector. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period due to increasing demand for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and passenger comfort systems.
The Asia Pacific regional market is anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to rising product demand from key industries including automotive, electronics, manufacturing, and others. In addition, growing robotics applications are also projected favorably impact regional growth. Europe accounted for a significant share in terms of revenue as well as volume in 2017 on account of high adoption levels of MR fluids across major countries such as Germany and France on account of favorable climatic conditions required minimal maintenance procedures after installation which further boosted product sales volumes within this region.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the medical sector for MRF products as they are non-toxic and biocompatible. This is expected to drive the market growth in the coming years.
- Growing awareness about the benefits of MRF products among consumers is also anticipated to fuel market growth over the forecast period.
- Rising number of research and development activities for new applications of MRF is projected to create lucrative opportunities for players operating in this market during the forecast period.
- The increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology across hospitals and diagnostic centers is likely to propel demand for MRF products in near future, thereby propelling market growth over next few years
