Market Overview:
The global atrial fibrillation devices market is expected to grow from USD 2.5 billion in 2018 to USD 4.1 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 6.4% during the forecast period. The growth of this market can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of atrial fibrillation, technological advancements in atrial fibrillation devices, and rising geriatric population. However, the high cost of treatment and lack of reimbursement are restraining the growth of this market. Based on type, the global atrial fibrillation devices market is segmented into catheter ablation and maze surgery.
Product Definition:
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a heart rhythm disorder that can cause blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. AF occurs when the electrical signals in the atria (upper chambers of the heart) become disorganized and start to fire erratically. This causes the atria to quiver instead of contracting normally, which interferes with blood flow from the atria to the ventricles (lower chambers of the heart). Devices used for treating Atrial Fibrillation are called "atrial fibrillation devices.
Catheter Ablation:
Atrial fibrillation is a type of cardiac arrhythmia, which is caused by irregular electrical activities in the atria. The rate of these irregular heartbeats can range from 40 to 100 times per minute. This condition may lead to blood clots forming in the heart and causing a stroke or heart attack.
Maze Surgery:
Maze surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias. It involves mapping out the electrical pathways in the heart using special instruments and then cutting those pathways to cure the problem. The pathway that is cut forms a loop, which causes less strain on the heart and helps it function normally.
Application Insights:
Based on application, the global atrial fibrillation devices market is segmented into hospitals, clinics and ambulatory surgical centers, and others. Hospitals held the largest share in 2017 owing to availability of advanced healthcare facilities along with highly skilled medical staff. In addition, hospitals are considered to be one of the best places for interventional procedures due to availability of highly skilled surgeons as well as equipment required for such procedures.
Hence, atrial fibrillation patients who require surgery are referred by their cardiologists to a hospital where they can get it done without any complications or additional costs. However, majority of these surgeries are conducted in specialized cardiac surgery units within hospitals which limits its use outside these settings thus accounting for a smaller share in comparison with other segments during recent years.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to the increasing prevalence of AF and its treatment. The U.S., which is a developed economy, accounted for a major share in North America due to technological advancements coupled with high healthcare expenditure levels.
Asia Pacific is expected to grow at an exponential rate over the forecast period owing to increasing awareness about AF and its associated risks, growing population base, rising disposable income levels, and availability of effective treatment methods in this region. Japan accounts for a significant share as Maze procedure was introduced there first than anywhere else in the world thus making it one of the largest markets worldwide.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is expected to drive the demand for atrial fibrillation devices over the forecast period. According to American Heart Association, around 5 million people in the U.S. are affected by AF and this number is expected to grow due to increasing aging population.
- Rising geriatric population is also a major factor that will contribute towards growth of atrial fibrillation devices market as incidence of AF increases with age. According to World Health Organization, global geriatric population was estimated 7% in 2000 and is projected to reach 21% by 2050.
