Market Overview:
Benzene derivatives are organic compounds that are derived from benzene. These derivatives have various applications in different industries. The global benzene derivative market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market is divided into chlorobenzene, toluene, nitrobenzene, cyclohexane cumene phenol ethyl benzene alkyl benzenes aniline. ChlorobenzENE is used as a precursor for making other chemicals such as pesticides and pharmaceuticals. ToluENE finds its application in paints & coatings and printing inks owing to its low volatility and good solubility in water. NitrobenzENE has diverse applications such as explosives & propellants, dyes & pigments etc., whereas Cyclohexane cumenE is used as a solvent for rubber processing oils and waxes owing to its high boiling point . Phenol finds major application in the production of plastics such as polycarbonates and epoxy resins while ethyl BenzENEis used extensivelyin manufacturing styrene monomer which further goes into making polystyrene products .
Product Definition:
Benzene derivatives are organic compounds that are derived from benzene. They are important because they are used to make many different types of products, including plastics, synthetic fibers, and pesticides.
Chlorobenzene:
Chlorobenzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is soluble in organic solvents. It has a strong odor of garlic and tastes like pickles. Chlorobenzene is a colorless crystalline solid, which on exposure to air becomes slightly yellowish. The product has the ability to dissolve easily in water owing to its hydrophilic nature and also reacts well with other chemicals such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and peroxides.
Toluene:
Toluene is a chemical compound, which is primarily derived from benzene. It has a boiling point of between 110-115 °C and a molecular weight of between 4.2-4.5 million (both numbers are for the form that exists in nature).
Application Insights:
The drug design application segment led the global benzene derivative market in 2017. This is attributed to increasing use of these chemicals for designing drugs. Benzene derivatives are used as intermediates in the production of a wide range of pharmaceutical products including antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and antipsychotics among others. The growing need for new drugs has increased research & development spending by companies which eventually results in higher consumption of benzene derivatives during R&D processes.
The biochemistry application segment is expected to witness growth at a CAGR similar to that observed for macromolecular chemistry over the forecast period owing to rising demand from various sectors such as food additives and pharmaceuticals among others.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global benzene derivatives market in 2017. The region is also expected to be the fastest-growing market over the forecast period owing to increasing product demand from various end-use industries, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. In addition, rising population and improving living standards are likely to contribute toward growth in this region.
The Asia Pacific was followed by Europe that accounted for a share of 25.0% in terms of volume in 2017 on account of high production levels found across countries such as Russia and Belgium coupled with growing demand from end-use industries for products with low toxicity properties compared to those derived from petroleum crude oil distillates.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, and automotive
- Rising production of polymers and plastics in Asia Pacific region
- Growing investments in R&D for the development of new products
- Expansion of global trade routes that are supporting the growth of export-oriented industries
- Technological advancements that are resulting in the development of more efficient and environment-friendly products
