Market Overview:
The global cardiac pacing market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of heart diseases, technological advancements in cardiac pacing devices, and rising geriatric population. Based on type, the global cardiac pacing market is segmented into temporary cardiac pacing, single-chamber cardiac pacing, dual-chamber cardiac pacing, single-chamber ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator), dual-chamber ICD and three chamber CRT-P (cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker). Temporary pacemakers are used for short term treatment such as during surgery or when a permanent pacemaker cannot be implanted immediately. Single chamber pacemakers are used for patients with only one functional ventricle and dual chamber pacemakers are used for patients with both atrial fibrillation and bradycardia. Single chamber ICDs are used for patients who have experienced a sudden heart attack (myocardial infarction) or those who have an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). Dual chamber ICDs also include devices that provide cardioversion shocks for restoring normal heart rhythm as well as antiarrythmic drugs therapies delivered via transvenous leads system inserted under the skin on your chest.
Product Definition:
A cardiac pacing system is a device used to maintain an appropriate heart rate in patients with an abnormally slow heart rate or in those who have had a heart attack.
Temporary Cardiac Pacing:
Temporary cardiac pacing (TCCP) is a technique that uses an external pacemaker to provide temporary support to the heart. The method is used in patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction or have undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery and require immediate assistance for pumping function of the heart.
Single-Chamber Cardiac Pacing:
Single-chamber cardiac pacing refers to a type of cardiac pacemaker that is used for treating bradycardia and tachycardia. The single chamber of the device contains a coil that generates an electric current to pace the heart. This current is conducted by electrodes placed on the skin around the heart.
Application Insights:
Bradyarrhythmia is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmia which affects around 20% to 30% of patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. The other common types of arrhythmias include tachyarrhythmia and heart block. In a patient suffering from atrial fibrillation, the risk for developing bradyarrhythmia is significantly high as compared to healthy individuals as well as patients with normal hearts. Therefore, permanent pacemakers are used in such cases owing to higher accuracy and better treatment options available for this condition than for others.
The use of temporary cardiac pace has been increasing over recent years due largely to technological advancements that have made it relatively easier and less expensive than before in comparison with permanent pacemakers.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. This can be attributed to the presence of well-established healthcare facilities, availability of advanced medical devices, and high adoption rate for new technologies in this region. Moreover, increasing number of FDA approvals for pacemakers and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices is also expected to drive growth during the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to rising geriatric population and improving economic conditions in emerging countries such as India & China & Japan etcetera – collectively called Asia Pacific Heart Network (APHRN). In addition, growing awareness about atrial fibrillation treatment options through various programs organized by governments as well as non-government organizations will boost demand further during the projected time frame.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)
- Growing geriatric population
- Rising demand for minimally invasive procedures
- Technological advancements in cardiac pacing devices
- increasing healthcare expenditure
