Product Definition:
Creosote is a tar-like substance that is obtained by distilling coal. Creosote has a pungent odor and is used as a preservative for wood, especially railroad ties.
Wood-tar:
Wood-tar is a pyrolysis oil, formed when wood is heated under high pressure. It consists of long-chained hydrocarbons and some oxygen. Wood tar has been used for centuries as a solvent in the production of creosote, which was widely utilized as an insecticide and fungicide until recently when it was discovered to be highly toxic.
Coal-tar:
Coal tar is a black, viscous liquid that is extracted from some of the coal types including lignite and sub-bituminous. It has high molecular weight which results in high viscosity. Coal tar includes about 40% to 60% carbon along with other impurities like hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and heavy metals.
Application Insights:
The industrial application segment led the global creosote market in 2017 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The product is widely used for preservation of wood as well as metal surfaces in industries such as construction, automotive, marine, and others. It also finds applications in chemical processing including bleaching and pulp mills where it acts as a preservative.
The medical application segment was valued at USD 22.5 million in 2017 owing to its use for treatment of various diseases including cancer and cardiovascular system disorders among others.
