Market Overview:
The global driveline control systems and devices market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles and rising awareness about vehicle safety features. Based on type, the driveline control systems and devices market is segmented into transfer case, fluid coupling, limited slip differential (LSD), and others. The transfer case segment is expected to hold the largest share of the global driveline control systems and devices market in 2018 owing to its widespread use in SUVs, luxury cars, LCVs, HCVs, etc. By application, the compact cars segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than other segments during the forecast period owing to increasing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles across regions. Geographically, North America dominates the global driveline control systems and devices market followed by Europe due to high adoption of advanced technologies in these regions.
Product Definition:
A driveline control system or device is a component of a vehicle that helps manage the power delivered to the wheels. It does this by regulating the amount of torque that is applied to the wheels and by controlling when and how power is delivered. This helps improve traction, handling, and fuel economy.
Transfer Case:
The transfer case is a mechanical device located between the transmission and the drive wheels of vehicles. It's main function is to shift gears and change speed by converting the engine power into torque via clutch packs or epicyclic gearing. In automobiles, it’s used for changing gear ratio in manual transmission vehicles or automatic transmissions with two or more forward speeds.
Fluid Coupling:
Fluid coupling is a mechanical device that connects transmission components to each other and to the engine. It helps in transferring torque from the engine to the input shaft of the transmission without any interruption due to gear changes. The main function of fluid coupling is to resist high forces, which are generated when vehicle is in motion and maintain its position as well as shape.
Application Insights:
The vehicles used in the driveline control system application are primarily compact cars, mid-size cars, SUVs, luxury cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs). The demand for these systems and devices is highest in the compact car segment owing to its higher number of gears. As a result, it requires a greater number of transmission components. The mid-sized car has more than three gears but fewer transmissions parts as compared to that of the large size vehicle. Thus, this segment holds lesser market share as compared to other segments.
The SUV segment is expected register significant growth over the forecast period due largely to its high gear count requirement coupled with an increased number of safety features such as rollover protection.
Regional Analysis:
The market in North America is expected to be driven by the growing demand for driveline control systems and devices in the U.S. The increasing number of fatalities due to accidents has led to a shift in consumer behavior, which has resulted into increased adoption of these systems across various segments including compact cars, mid-size cars, and luxury cars. Moreover, stringent government regulations regarding fuel economy along with CO2 emissions are anticipated to drive innovation across this region over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is estimated to be one of the fastest-growing regions owing its large population base along with rising disposable income levels that have triggered an increase in vehicle production across countries such as China and India thereby driving growth for driveline control system manufacturers operating within Asia Pacific region over past few years (2016 & 2017).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for fuel-efficient and low-emission vehicles
- Rising demand from the automotive sector
- Growing popularity of electric and hybrid vehicles
- Proliferation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in automobiles
- Increasing adoption of driveline control systems in commercial vehicles
