Market Overview:
The global drug of abuse (DOA) testing market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing incidence of drug abuse, growing demand for accurate and timely results, and rising awareness about the benefits of DOA testing. The urine segment is expected to dominate the global DOA testing market in terms of revenue share during the forecast period. This segment is anticipated to be driven by factors such as its low cost and easy availability. However, saliva-based tests are gaining popularity due their non-invasive nature and ability to detect recent drug use. In terms of application, hospitals are expected to account for the largest share of revenue in the global DOA testing market during 2018–2030 owingto th e increasing numberof patients seeking treatment for addiction disordersand growing adoptionofdrug screeningtestsby healthcare providers .
Product Definition:
Drug of Abuse (DOA) Testing is the process of testing a specimen, usually urine, for the presence of drugs that are not typically prescribed by a doctor. The purpose of Drug of Abuse (DOA) Testing is to detect drug use and help ensure safety in the workplace.
Urine:
Urine is a body fluid that is present in both men and women. Urine can be collected from the patient by means of a catheter or through an invasive procedure known as urological collection. The sample of urine is analyzed for its chemical composition to determine if it meets the legal requirements for drug testing.
Saliva:
Saliva is a body fluid that is produced in the gums of the teeth. It contains enzymes, proteins, and hormones. Saliva can contain drugs as well as bacteria from the mouth. The amount of drug or bacteria present in saliva depends on two factors such as frequency of use and oral habits (eating, drinking).
Drugs or chemicals get absorbed into the bloodstream through mucous membranes present in the mouth while using drugs orally.
Application Insights:
Based on the application, the market is segmented into hospitals, workplaces, at-home and others. Hospitals held the largest share of over 60% in 2017 owing to widespread usage of drugs by patients for committing suicide or for obtaining pleasure while using these substances. Moreover, hospitals are one of the major sources where DOA testing is conducted due to easy availability and low cost as compared to other settings such as laboratories or workplaces.
However, at-home testing has been observed to be on a rise since 2016 due to increasing awareness about drug use among individuals especially after watching movies/series depicting illegal drug use which has resulted in an increase in DOA testing kits sales at homes across countries worldwide including North America and Europe.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has been witnessing an increasing number of substance abuse cases, which has led to a rise in demand for drug-related testing services. China, India, Japan, Australia and South Korea are some of the countries that have reported high incidences of drug abuse coupled with high unmet needs for DOA testing services.
The Asia Pacific market was followed by North America with a revenue share of around 25%. Factors such as local presence of key service providers offering advanced diagnostic solutions; well-established healthcare infrastructure; increased funding from government & other organizations; and growing awareness about early diagnosis are contributing towards regional growth. In addition, factors such as higher disposable income levels among individuals and families along with rising health concerns due to substance abuse is further anticipated to boost regional demand during the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of drug abuse across the globe
- Growing demand for early diagnosis and treatment of drug abuse
- Rising public awareness about harmful effects of drug abuse
- Proliferation of rehabilitation centers for treatment of drug abusers
- Technological advancements in DOA testing methods
