Market Overview:
The global engineered hardwood flooring market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for engineered hardwood flooring from residential and commercial applications. In terms of type, the tongue-and-groove (T&G) technology segment is expected to hold a major share of the market during the forecast period, owing to its easy installation and low maintenance requirements. However, in terms of growth rate, the click-locking technology segment is expected to register higher growth rates during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
Engineered hardwood flooring is a type of flooring that is made from multiple layers of wood. The top layer is usually made from oak, maple, cherry, or some other type of hardwood. The bottom layer is typically made from a cheaper wood, such as pine. Engineered hardwood flooring is more durable than traditional laminate flooring and it can be installed over most types of existing floors, including concrete.
Tongue-and-groove (T&G) Technology:
T&G is a technology used in flooring industry to manufacture engineered hardwood flooring. It's basically a process of binding veneers with adhesive and then applying second coat of adhesive on the backside of each veneer. The two coats are pressed together at an angle to create tongue-and-groove appearance, hence the name T&G (for Tongue and Groove).
Click-locking Technology:
The technology is used to bind the subfloor and flooring together by way of a special-purpose adhesive that sets up quickly. The process can be utilized in both new construction as well as renovation projects, and it functions similarly to how traditional wood floors are installed.
Application Insights:
The commercial application segment led the global engineered hardwood flooring market in 2017 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The growing construction industry, particularly in developing countries of Asia Pacific and Latin America is expected to boost product demand in this segment.
Engineered wood floors have high durability, low maintenance cost, natural look and feel underfoot, which makes them suitable for use in residential as well as commercial applications. Increasing consumer preference for wooden flooring products especially from China where traditional knowledge of woodworking is still alive will propel market growth over the next eight years.
Residential application accounted for a share of more than 50% in 2017 owing to increasing product adoption due to their characteristics such as ease of installation along with superior aesthetics when compared with other materials used within homes such as carpeted surfaces or vinyl covered ones.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in terms of revenue with a share of over 40.0% in 2017. This is attributed to growing consumer preference for engineered hardwood flooring products as they provide aesthetic appeal and are easy to maintain. Moreover, increasing demand for single-family houses is expected to drive the regional product demand over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific emerged as a prominent consumer of engineered hardwood flooring and accounted for close to 20% share in 2017 owing to rising construction activities primarily driven by rapid urbanization and growing population especially in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia Philippines Thailand Vietnam among other Southeast Asian countries which has resulted into increased spending on residential infrastructure such as hospitals schools colleges airports etc.; thereby driving product consumption across this region during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030 (see Figure 1).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the construction sector as a result of growth in the global population and rise in disposable income.
- Rapid urbanization, which is leading to an increase in the number of residential and commercial buildings, driving demand for flooring products.
- The increasing popularity of hardwood flooring over traditional flooring materials such as carpets and tiles due to its durability and aesthetic appeal.
- Technological advancements that have led to the development of new types of engineered hardwood floors with enhanced features such as resistance to moisture and scratches.
- Rising environmental awareness among consumers, which is resulting in an increased preference for sustainable flooring products such as engineered hardwood floors
