Market Overview:

The global environmentally acceptable lubricants market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly products and stringent regulations on the use of conventional lubricants. Based on type, the global environmentally acceptable lubricants market is segmented into mineral oils, fixed oils, and synthetic oils. Mineral oil-based products are projected to lead the market in terms of volume during the forecast period owing to their low cost and easy availability. However, synthetic oil-based products are expected to grow at a higher CAGR due their superior properties such as high thermal stability and low volatility. In terms of application, deep-sea applications accounted for majority share in 2017; however, inland/coastal applications are projected to witness highest growth during the forecast period owing to rising demand from end-use industries such as automotive & transportation and manufacturing sectors.

Global Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants are lubricants that do not pose a threat to the environment. They are made from renewable resources or recycled materials, and they biodegrade quickly.

Mineral Oils:

Mineral oils are a group of petroleum-based products that are extracted from the earth through drilling and exploration processes. These oils have high viscosity, low volatility, and contain an even distribution of components. Mineral oil is produced in several ways; one such process involves using solvents to extract the product from the ground along with other impurities present in crude oil.

Fixed Oils:

Fixed oils are those that do not volatilize, evaporate or dissolve in the presence of water. They are extracted from plant and animal matter and have a characteristic taste, color and odor. Fixed oils include essential oil as well as non-essential oil products such as refined mineral oil, seed cake etc., produced by the processing of oleochemicals.

Application Insights:

The other application segment includes air pollution control, aerospace, industrial machinery and equipment, marine engines and turbines, off-highway diesel engine applications including heavy-duty trucks and buses. The demand for the product is expected to increase owing to its ability to reduce emissions in the aforementioned applications.

Deep-sea was the largest application segment of the global EALM market in 2017 accounting for over 40% of total market volume. Rising awareness regarding sustainable fishing practices coupled with increasing pressure on deepwater resources from both domestic & foreign oil companies is anticipated drive growth over next few years.         Efforts by major industry players such as BP Plc., Royal Dutch Shell plc.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for more than 50% of the overall demand owing to high consumption of mineral oils in various applications including industrial, automotive, and marine. China is one of the largest markets for mineral oils globally as it has been using this product extensively across a broad range of industries due to its superior properties such as low toxicity, ease in processing, stability at high temperatures etc.

The increasing use of synthetic lubricants across various applications due to their enhanced performance characteristics such as extreme temperature resistance & viscosity index matching ability are also contributing toward growth significantly.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand from the automotive and transportation industry for environment-friendly lubricants
  • Stringent environmental regulations by governments across the globe for reducing emissions and promoting use of environmentally friendly products
  • Rising awareness among consumers about the benefits of using environment-friendly lubricants
  • Growing number of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that are offering environment-friendly lubricants as factory fill fluids
  • Proliferation of eco-conscious initiatives by various organizations to promote use of environmentally acceptable lubricants
