Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is an organic compound with the formula C4H9OCH3. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and has a fruity odor. ETBE is produced by the reaction of ethanol with tert-butyl chloride. It can be used as an additive in gasoline to reduce smog-forming emissions.


ETBE from Bioethanol:


ETBE is a bio-based, renewable and biodegradable organic compound. It has been used as an inhalation anesthetic in veterinary medicine for decades. In recent years, it has emerged as a potential fuel additive for gasoline engines owing to its high octane number (96), low toxicity and non-toxic nature like other traditional fuels such as diesel or petrol.


ETBE from Synthetic Ethanol:


ETBE is a bio-based, renewable and non-toxic ether that can be formulated from agricultural waste materials such as sugarcane bagasse and corn cobs. It has been found to have superior properties when compared to other bio-basedethers available in the market. ETBE is commonly used as an alternative fuel for gasoline engines in automobiles due to its high octane rating of 113 (as compared to ethanol’s 100).

Gasoline additives were the major application segment and accounted for over 60% of the global market in 2016.
