Market Overview:
The global europium market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing demand for europium in various applications, such as catalysts, metal alloys, glass polishing, permanent magnets, glass additives, ceramics and phosphors. Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region for the global europium market and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2018 to 2030.
Product Definition:
Europium is a rare earth metal that is used to make phosphors, which are substances that emit light when they are exposed to radiation. Europium is also used in the production of lasers and other optical devices.
Eu(II):
Eu(II) is a chemical compound of europium and oxygen. It has a bright yellow color which is highly soluble in water (2 g/L). Eu(II) can be prepared by the reaction of euxylene with sulfuric acid or by the reduction of trisodium phosphate esterification. Eu(II) has been used as an additive for plastic products, rubber, paints & coatings, printing inks, and ceramics.
Eu(III):
Eu(III) is a chemical compound of element europium and is a rare earth metal. It has the formula Eu3+. It is solid at room temperature but becomes liquid under exposure to light, which makes it suitable for use in solar cells. The most commonly used source for Eu(III) production involves the fusion reaction between lithium and uranium (LiU), which produces U3O8 along with an additional amount of energy from nuclear fission.
Application Insights:
The permanent magnets segment is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand in applications such as electric motors, hard disk drives, and generators. The industry has witnessed a rise in demand for Eu-based permanent magnets due to their high performance and unique properties. These properties include anisotropic magnetization and coercivity which are exhibited by these materials under different temperatures. An increase in production of consumer electronics has also positively influenced the growth of this application segment.
Electronics was one of the largest application segments accounting for over 30% of global market volume in 2017 on account of rising consumption polycrystalline ferroalloys containing Eu as a strengthening agent along with iron.
Regional Analysis:
The market in Europe is anticipated to be the second-largest globally, accounting for over 30% of the global revenue share in 2016. The region is expected to witness a moderate growth rate over the forecast period owing to stringent government regulations regarding Europium mining and processing that are intended for environmental protection. In addition, high demand from end-use industries such as electronics and lighting has also contributed significantly towards regional market growth.
Asia Pacific was estimated as the largest consumer with a volume-based share of nearly 60% in 2016 owing to rapid industrialization coupled with increasing population and living standards across emerging economies including China, India, Indonesia & Malaysia have been fueling product demand across various applications such as catalysts metal alloys glass polishing permanent magnets glass additives ceramics phosphors & others).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for europium from the fluorescent lighting and television industries as they move towards more energy-efficient products.
- Europium's use in red phosphors is expected to see significant growth due to the increasing demand for color televisions and other display devices.
- The increasing popularity of LED lighting is also expected to spur demand for europium, as this technology requires phosphors that emit red light.
- Growing awareness of the benefits of using europium in medical applications is likely to result in increased demand from this sector over the next few years.
