Global Feedstuff Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Feedstuff is a collective term for all food used as feed for livestock and poultry. It includes hay, straw, silage, grains, and protein supplements. The use of feedstuffs is important because they provide the nutrients needed to produce meat, eggs, or milk.

Vitamins:

Vitamins are organic compounds that act as nutraceuticals and are added to animal feed for improving its nutritional value. Vitamins can be classified into two groups, namely water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins.

Minerals:

Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic elements, which are used as an essential part of the diet by animals. Minerals provide numerous benefits to animal feedstuff such as increased resistance to disease and stress, along with enhanced physical performance. The most important minerals for ruminant nutrition include phosphorous, potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and sulfur (S).

Application Insights:

Ruminants were the largest application segment in 2017 and are expected to continue their dominance over the forecast period. The product is majorly used as a feed additive for ruminant animals, such as cattle, sheep-goat, and buffalos. Rumen microorganisms including bacteria and fungi play an important role in nutrient digestion by providing essential nutrients such as vitamins (B6 & B12), minerals (Mg., Ca.), amino acids (isoleucine & lysine) required for animal growth.

Poultry was another significant application segment accounting for a share of 22% in 2017 owing to rising demand from Asia Pacific region where poultry is a popular food source among people due to growing income levels coupled with increasing awareness about healthy eating habits among consumers has resulted in high consumption of poultry products which include eggs, meat and offal.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global feedstuff industry in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing meat consumption in this region, especially in China and India. The Chinese market is witnessing a shift from traditional animal source protein (TSFP) toward high-quality modern animal source protein (MAS) that provides better economic returns for producers.

The Indian market has been growing rapidly on account of rising disposable income among its population, which has led to an increase in meat consumption across various categories including beef, poultry, pork as well as seafood products such as fish fillets and mincemeat pie filling. Furthermore, government initiatives promoting livestock farming are anticipated to boost demand for feed supplements over the coming years.

North America accounted for a major share owing to high production levels of poultry.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for meat and dairy products from developing countries is expected to drive the feedstuff market growth over the forecast period.
  • Growing awareness about animal nutrition and feed additives is projected to propel the feedstuff market growth in near future.
  • Rising demand for bio-based products as a source of livestock feed is anticipated to fuel Feedstuff market growth over the next few years.
