Market Overview:
The global flux cored welding wire market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The gas-shielded flux cored welding wire segment is expected to dominate the market with a share of 89% in 2018. This segment is also projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The application segments of machinery, structural fabrication, ship building, bridges and others are expected to witness high growth rates during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
Flux cored welding wire is a type of welding wire that uses a flux core to produce the weld. The flux core contains both the electrode and the shielding gas, which means that it does not require an external shielding gas supply like other types of welding wires do. This makes flux cored welding wire ideal for use in portable or limited-access applications.
Gas-shielded:
Gas-shielded welding wire is a type of metal-cored welding wire that has been coated with an inert gas such as argon, helium or carbon dioxide. The primary function of the gas-coated welding wire is to protect the weld pool from hot spots which can cause reignition and also control spatter. A typical GSWW consists of a core made up of high strength steel wires wrapped in an outer layer made up by using lower alloyed steel or aluminum.
Self-shielded:
Self-shielded welding wire is a type of electric arc welding equipment that uses a metal shield to protect the weld pool from oxidation and contamination. The product is used in various applications such as shipbuilding, offshore exploration, oil & gas pipelines fabrication and maintenance operations among others. It also finds application in heavy plate fabrication for steel structures on account of its ability to provide high heat input with low smoke and spatter.
Application Insights:
The machinery application segment accounted for the largest share of the global flux cored welding wire market in 2018. Flux cored welding wires are widely used in metal cutting applications as they have high penetration rates and can be used to weld a large range of metals with different characteristics. The ability to withstand high pressure without getting deformed is one of the key factors that are responsible for its increased use in machinery applications.
Flux corers or mig welders require only a small amount of shielding gas compared to MIG welder, which reduces their cost and makes them more energy efficient. These machines have replaceable electrode assemblies that consist of an inner core capable of handling high currents, along with an outer shield that protects people and surrounding areas from hazards associated with electricarcs such as sparks and flying particles during operation.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest regional market in 2018 and accounted for a share of over 30%. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing foreign investments in countries such as China, India, and Japan. For instance, according to The World Bank Group, FDI inflows into India grew by 6% from 2014 to 2017. Similarly, China’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) grew by 14% from 2014 to 2016.
North America is projected to grow at an estimated CAGR of XX% from 2018 till 2030 owing high product demand in shipbuilding industry coupled with government initiatives aimed at boosting infrastructure development across U.S., Canada & Mexico region which includes bridges & buildings etc.).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for flux cored welding wire from the automotive and construction industries due to the growing need for lightweight and durable vehicles and structures.
- Rising popularity of flux cored welding as a cost-effective alternative to gas metal arc welding (GMAW) due to its high deposition rates and low weld porosity levels.
- Growing demand for automated welding systems that use flux cored wire, owing to its high deposition rates and low weld porosity levels.
- Technological advancements in flux core wires that have resulted in improved weld quality, productivity, and corrosion resistance.
