Market Overview:
The global food grade industrial gases market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for food grade industrial gases from various end-use applications, such as freezing & chilling, packaging, carbonation, and others. In addition, the growing population and rising income levels are also contributing to the growth of this market. Based on type, the global food grade industrial gases market is segmented into carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), and others (hydrogen and argon). Among these types, CO2 held a major share of the global food grade industrial gases market in 2017. This can be attributed to its high demand from various end-use applications such as freezing & chilling and carbonation.
Product Definition:
Food grade industrial gases are used in the food and beverage industry to help with the processing, packaging, and preservation of food. They are also used in restaurants and other businesses that prepare or serve food. Some of the most common types of food grade industrial gases include carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and oxygen.
Carbon Dioxide:
Carbon dioxide is a colorless and odorless gas, with a slight sweetish taste. It is produced naturally by the fermentation of organic materials such as sugar or fruit juices. Inhaling carbon dioxide has no harmful effects; however, exposure to large amounts of it can cause dizziness and headache.
Nitrogen:
Nitrogen is a colorless and odorless gas, with a mild aroma similar to the smell of the air in spring. It is primarily manufactured by the reaction between ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2). However, due to its low solubility in water (0.5%) it is mostly found in molecular form as a part of molecular nitrogen (N2) in plants or animals.
Application Insights:
Packaging was the dominant application segment and accounted for a revenue share of over 40.0% in 2017. The growth of the packaging industry is directly related to consumerism, which has been growing at an exponential rate since the 19th century. Consumer goods such as smartphones, tablets, laptops etc., are getting increasingly expensive due to high demand and low supply which is driving consumers towards acquiring these products by spending more on them. This trend is expected to continue over the next few years thus driving product demand in packaging applications during this period.
Food grade industrial gases are used for carbonation process wherein CO2 or N2O gas is used as a propellant while introducing into beverages such as beer bottles or can be also be used alone where no additional propellants are required (such as when carbonating mineral water). Other food grade industrial gases that find application usage include: hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and oxygen (O2).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the leading regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounted for a share of more than 30% of global food grade industrial gases market in terms of revenue. China, India, Japan, South Korea are some of the major countries that contribute towards large share held by Asia Pacific region. Increasing population coupled with rising living standards have led to an increase in consumer spending on food products which has resulted into high demand for gaseous products such as carbon dioxide and others across this region.
Europe is anticipated to be one of the fastest growing regions owing to increasing awareness regarding benefits offered by these gases such as improved quality and enhanced shelf life coupled with rising demand from end-use industries including dairy production, meat processing & packaging among others will drive this regional market over the forecast period. North America also accounted for a significant share owing to presence or key companies involved in frozen foods & packaged foods like JBF Corporation; Tyson Food Inc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for food grade industrial gases from the food and beverage industry as a result of the growth in population and rising income levels.
- Rapid urbanization, which is resulting in an increase in the number of restaurants, hotels, and other food service establishments that require food grade industrial gases for their operations.
- The growing popularity of packaged foods and ready-to-eat meals, which has led to an increase in the demand for food grade industrial gases used in packaging applications.
- The increasing use of gas chromatography (GC) techniques for quality control testing by the food industry to ensure product safety and compliance with regulatory norms.
- Technological advancements that are enabling the development of new applications for food grade industrial gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) based refrigeration systems
