Product Definition:
Lubricants that meet the requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in contact with food are classified as "food grade." The FDA has specific regulations that must be met by any lubricant intended for use with food, including lubricants used in manufacturing and packaging processes. Lubricants that do not meet FDA standards may contain chemicals or metals that can contaminate food products.
Mineral Oil:
Mineral oil is a colorless, tasteless liquid that is widely used as a food-grade lubricant. It consists of fatty acids and long-chained alcohols in an even distribution throughout the mass. Mineral oils are produced from crude oil by fractionation process or through esterification of oils. The most commonly used mineral oils are petrolatum (petroleum), paraffin, and heptane among others which include brine shrimp oil (BSH).
Synthetic Oil:
Synthetic oil is a manufactured product and has no relation to the natural oils. It is produced by the chemical reaction of oleochemicals such as glycerol with synthetic base oils.
Application Insights:
The global food grade lubricants market has been segmented on the basis of application into the food industry, beverages industry, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. The food application led with over 55% share in 2017. Growing demand for processed meat products such as bacon is expected to drive product demand in this segment over the forecast period.
In addition, increasing consumption of flavored oils such as soybean oil is anticipated to further fuel growth in this segment during the forecast period. Furthermore, growing use of flavored oils in bakery & confectionery products is expected to have a positive impact on overall market growth during the same period owing to rising consumer preference for novel flavors across various applications including salad dressings and sauces at restaurants and fast foods chains globally.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for more than 40% of the total population, approximately 6 billion people. It is also one of the most urbanized regions with more than 50% of its total population living in cities compared to 37% globally. Thus, it has become a major consumer as well as producer across various industries including food & beverages, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics among others.
The increasing disposable income coupled with growing awareness regarding personal grooming products such as skin care creams, hair oil etc., are likely to drive demand from Asia Pacific region during the forecast period. Europe accounted for over 20% share in terms of revenue and is expected to grow at a significant rate over next eight years owing to high consumption levels associated with personal care products such as skin cream among others in Germany; France; Italy; U K.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from food and beverage industry: The global food and beverage industry is growing at a rapid pace. This is driving the demand for food grade lubricants, as they are essential for various processing and packaging applications in this industry.
- Rising awareness about the benefits of food grade lubricants: Food grade lubricants offer several benefits over conventional mineral oils, such as improved equipment performance, reduced maintenance costs, and longer equipment life. This is resulting in an increase in their adoption across various industries.
- Growing popularity of green technologies: There is a growing trend towards the adoption of green technologies across industries worldwide. Food grade lubricants that are made from renewable resources are becoming increasingly popular due to their environmental friendly nature.
