Product Definition:
Fused Silica is a man-made product that is made of very pure quartz sand. It has a very low thermal expansion coefficient, making it ideal for use in high temperature applications. Fused Silica is also non-toxic and has a very low reactivity with other materials.
First Grade Material:
First grade material is a high purity form of silica, which is widely used in the glass industry. It has 99.8% free from impurities and can be used as a substitute for any other grades of fumed silica in almost all applications. The major application areas include specialty glass, fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP), and safety glasses among others like adhesives & sealants, coatings & paints among others like rubber tires and linoleum flooring etc.
Second Grade Material:
Second grade material is a low-quality fused silica, which is used as an abrasive for glass polishing and also finds application in the production of ceramics. The product has a composition of about 68% SiO2 with little or no alumina and other accessory materials. It can be produced by various methods including the Solvay process, High-Pressure Processing (HPP), and Rockwood process.
Application Insights:
The solar industry was the largest consumer of the product in 2017, accounting for over 40% of global demand. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for photovoltaic modules and rising awareness among consumers regarding energy conservation.
Fused silica is used as an additive in semiconductor manufacturing to improve various properties such as strength, toughness, thermal stability and thermal conductivity. It is also used in refractory materials that are primarily used in the construction industry for lining kilns where high temperatures are required to fire ceramic tiles or bricks. Fused silica has a low rate of expansion when it comes to temperature which makes it suitable for use in these applications owing to its non-brittle nature.
Other applications include food processing industries and chemical sectors where products with specific functionalities are required by name (for instance; flame retardants).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region comprises several emerging economies, such as China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Increasing construction spending owing to growing population coupled with government initiatives for infrastructure development is likely to drive demand from 2018 to 2030.
The European region accounted for a share of more than 25% in 2017 owing to high demand from end-use industries including refractories and solar energy. However, stringent environmental regulations regarding waste disposal are expected to hamper industry growth over the next eight years.
