Market Overview:
The global gas separation membrane market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for gas separation membranes in various applications such as isolation of inert N2 from air, H2 recovery, CO2 removal from natural gas, vapor/nitrogen separation, and other applications. In addition, the growing demand for clean energy is also fueling the growth of the global gas separation membrane market. However, high installation and maintenance cost may restrain the growth of this market during the forecast period. On basis on type, hollow fiber accounted for majority share in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during forecast period due to its properties such as high flux rate and low pressure drop across membrane surface area. On basis on application; Isolation of inert N2 from air segment accounted for major share in 2017 owing to rising demand for nitrogen in food & beverage industry and other end-use industries across globe .
Product Definition:
A gas separation membrane is a type of membrane that is used to separate gases from each other. This type of membrane can be used to separate different types of gases, or to remove impurities from gases. The importance of gas separation membranes lies in their ability to improve the quality and purity of gases.
Hollow Fiber:
Hollow fiber or lumen fiber is a type of high-strength, lightweight, and flexible insulated fiber optic cable. It consists of an inner core made up of highly flexible insulation material (such as polymeric resin) surrounded by an outer sheath made from tough but pliable insulation material (such as aramid). Lumen fibers are used in telecommunication & data transmission applications due to their advantages such as small size and lightweight.
Spiral Wound:
A spiral wound membrane is a type of gas separation membrane with an open-ended, coiled structure. It consists of a semi-rigid polymer film that is wound around a cylinder to form an enclosed volume. The semi-rigid nature of the film allows it to stretch in response to the pressure differential between the inside and outside of the membrane, thereby creating a vacuum that draws gas molecules towards it and forms a barrier across its orifice.
Application Insights:
The global gas separation membrane market is segmented on the basis of application into isolation of inert gases such as nitrogen and oxygen, hydrogen recovery, carbon dioxide removal from natural gas, vapor/nitrogen separation and others. The isolation of inert gases such as nitrogen is expected to be the fastest-growing application segment over the forecast period owing to rising demand for industrial processes that require low-temperature insulation.
Increasing use in industrial applications coupled with growing product penetration in power generation equipment has resulted in high growth potential for this market over the coming years. In addition, increasing R&D investments by major players are anticipated to augment industry growth during this period.
The other applications segment includes catalytic cracking unit (CCU), FCC process unit and reformer which involves Gasmask technology used for removing impurities from natural gas feedstock required for manufacturing various chemicals including fertilizers.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global gas separation membrane market in terms of revenue with a share of over 40.0% in 2017. This is attributed to increasing shale gas exploration and production activities coupled with rising demand for natural gas as a fuel source across the region. The U.S.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness substantial growth during the forecast period owing to rapid economic development along with increasing government support for fossil-fuel based power generation projects such as coal bed methane (CBM) and enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for gas separation membrane from the chemical and petrochemical industries due to the growing need for purified gases.
- Rising demand for gas separation membranes in Asia Pacific due to the expanding industrial base and increasing investments in manufacturing sector.
- Growing popularity of membrane technology over traditional methods of gas separation owing to its high efficiency and low operating costs.
- Technological advancements in gas separation membranes that are helping reduce their size, weight, and energy consumption levels.
