Market Overview:
The global gas-to-liquid (GTL) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The GTL diesel segment is expected to account for the majority share of the global GTL market in terms of revenue, followed by GTL naphtha and other segments. The fuel oil application segment is expected to be the largest application segment for GTL products, followed by lubricating oil and process oils applications. North America is estimated to be the largest regional market for GTL products in 2018, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific. However, Asia Pacific is projected to register highest CAGR during the forecast period due to increasing demand from countries such as China and India.
Product Definition:
Gas-to-liquid (GTL) is the process of converting natural gas into liquid fuels, such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. The importance of Gas-to-liquid (GTL) is that it can provide a cleaner and more efficient way to produce transportation fuels than traditional oil refining.
GTL Diesel:
Diesel is one of the most commonly used fossil fuels. It is produced by the complete or partial combustion of hydrocarbons, usually oils and gases derived from petroleum. Diesel has a high calorific value (energy content) compared to other common fuels such as gasoline which makes it more energy dense and hence preferred for transportation applications.
GTL Naphtha:
GTL Naphtha is a type of petroleum liquid that is produced as a by-product in the process of gas to liquid (GTL) extraction. GTL naphtha has low viscosity and boiling point which makes it an ideal fuel for use in conventional as well as unconventional applications. It can be used directly in engines or processed further to create various grades including jet A, jet B, kerosene, diesel and heavy fuel oil among others.
Application Insights:
The global gas-to-liquid market has witnessed significant growth in recent years owing to the growing demand for fuel oil and lubricating oil. The increasing need for transportation of natural gas from its source to processing plants, which ultimately leads to the production of these fuels, is expected to be a major factor driving the industry over the forecast period.
Lubricating oils emerged as one of the largest application segment with a volume share of 33.3% in 2017 and is anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period due largely on account of its high energy content per unit weight as compared with other liquids such as diesel or gasoline. It also possesses better properties such as higher flash point and lower density than other liquid fuels derived from fossil fuels such as coal or petroleum products like jet fuel or diesel kerosene etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global gas-to-liquid market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has a large number of refineries that are still in the process of modernization. Furthermore, increasing demand for motor fuels coupled with growing petrochemical capacities is likely to drive regional growth over the next eight years.
North America accounted for 24% of total market share in 2016 owing to high product demand from various end-use industries such as automotive, industrial machinery, and others. In addition, rising environmental concerns have resulted in increased investments by major oil companies resulting into higher availability of products with superior properties suitable for different applications compared to crude oil counterparts thus driving industry growth across this region as well.
The Middle East & Africa (MEA) was one among the significant contributors towards refining capacity expansion across several countries including Saudi Arabia.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for cleaner and efficient fuels: The global push for cleaner fuel sources is expected to drive the GTL market. In addition, the increasing demand for high-quality fuels is also anticipated to boost the growth of this market.
- Stringent environmental regulations: Stringent environmental regulations across various countries are compelling companies to shift towards cleaner fuel sources such as GTL. This is expected to create lucrative opportunities for the GTL market in the coming years.
- Technological advancements: The development of new and innovative technologies has helped in improving the efficiency of GTL plants, thus driving its adoption globally. This is likely to propel the growth of this market in future years as well..
