Market Overview:
The global gaseous helium market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for helium in various applications such as cryogenics, aerostatics, pressurizing and purging, leak detection & gas chromatography, welding and other applications. Additionally, the growing industrialization and urbanization are also contributing to the growth of the global gaseous helium market. However, factors such as limited availability of helium reserves and high price volatility are restraining the growth of this market. On basis of type, industrial-grade helium accounted for majority share in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during forecast period. This can be attributed to its widespread use across various industries such as aerospace & defense; medical & healthcare; research institutions; electronics; food processing; metal fabrication among others.
Product Definition:
Gaseous helium is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas. It is the second most abundant element in the universe and makes up about 24% of the Earth's atmosphere. Helium is used in balloons, air bags, and other products that need to be lightweight and non-toxic.
Industrial-Grade Helium:
Industrial-grade helium is the commercial name for pure, gaseous form of helium. It is a colorless and odorless gas with a soft sound. Helium has the lowest boiling point of any gas which makes it suitable for cryogenic applications including superconductivity in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetism in MRI machines. Industrial grade helium accounts for over 50% of total global production along with being one of the most consumed gases across various industries globally.
Grade A:
The grade A is the purest form of helium available which has no impurities or additives. It is used in various applications such as cryogenic storage, liquid air line fillers, and thermal insulation for extremely low temperatures. The grade A helium gas has a purity level of more than 99.5%.
Application Insights:
The welding application segment led the global market and accounted for more than 35.0% share of the total revenue in 2017. The rising demand for high-quality gaseous helium owing to its properties, such as low thermal expansion, low conductivity, high purity and non-flammability is expected to drive the segment growth over the forecast period.
Cryogenics was another prominent application that accounted for a significant market share in terms of volume as well as revenue in 2017 due to increasing demand from various industries including medical, semiconductor packaging and testing centers which utilize liquid nitrogen or liquefied natural gas (LNG)as a cryogenic agent.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the dominant regional market and accounted for over 42% of global volume in 2016. The region is expected to witness significant growth owing to increasing industrialization, especially in India, China, Japan and South Korea. In addition, rising demand from various end-use industries such as electronics manufacturing and automotive is anticipated to propel the market growth over the forecast period.
The Asia Pacific gaseous helium market was dominated by China owing to its large production base along with growing industrialization across all major application sectors including aerospace & defense (20%), medical (18%) and other applications (44%). Rising investments in new production facilities are projected to boost product demand across all regions during the forecast period. For instance; Air Liquide invested around USD X million for constructing a new production facility of H2 gas at Datong city located in Shanxi Province which is expected be operational by 2018/19 season.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for helium in various industrial and commercial applications is expected to drive the growth of the global gaseous helium market during the forecast period.
- Rising demand for helium from the medical sector is another major factor that is anticipated to fuel the growth of this market in the near future.
- Growing use of helium in semiconductor manufacturing and other research activities is also projected to propel market growth over the next few years.
- Increasing investments by key players in new production facilities are likely to boost expansion of this market during the forecast period. 5) Technological advancements that help reduce Helium consumption are expected to create new opportunities for this market over coming years
