Product Definition:


Geothermal power generation is the process of generating electrical power from the earth's thermal energy. The thermal energy in the Earth comes from radioactive decay and residual heat from formation of the planet. Geothermal reservoirs are located near tectonic plate boundaries, where hot spots, volcanic activity or geysers are found.


The importance of geothermal power generation is that it is a renewable resource that does not produce emissions like other forms of electrical generation such as coal-fired plants. Additionally, it can be used to generate direct heat for industrial processes or district heating schemes.


Back Pressure:


Back pressure is defined as the pressure which exists between the geothermal reservoir and the power generation plant. It depends on various factors such as type of geothermal system, flow rate, distance from source and capacity of equipment. The backpressure in a natural geyser is usually around 0 - 5 bars (0 - 60kPa), whereas in man-made systems it can be higher than 20 bars (0 - 600kPa).


Binary:


Binary is a combination of two distinct elements, which are used to generate geothermal power. The most commonly used binary plants include one or more dry heaters and one or more wet generators. These systems can be utilized for various applications including space heating, cooling, domestic hot water generation and central heating among others.


Application Insights:


Dry steam power stations dominated the global industry, accounting for over 75% of the total installed capacity in 2017. These plants use the geothermal steam to drive a conventional boiler and produce electricity through turbines. The generated electricity is then transmitted to homes through an overhead cable system.


The growing demand for energy in countries such as Japan and China has resulted in increased investments from both domestic and foreign players in these regions. Countries such as Japan have made significant efforts towards increasing its reliance on renewable sources of energy including solar, wind and geothermal due to environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gas emissions resulting from burning fossil fuels like coal and oil which contribute towards global warming.
