Market Overview:

The global Germane Tetrafluoride (GeF4) market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period, 2018-2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for Germane Tetrafluoride (GeF4) in chemical synthesis and pharmaceutical applications. Additionally, the growing demand from Asia Pacific is expected to boost the market growth during the forecast period. However, volatility in prices of raw materials may restrain the market growth during the forecast period. Based on type, 99% purity segment is projected to hold a major share of global Germane Tetrafluoride (GeF4) market during 2018-2030. This can be attributed to its high purity and wide range of applications in chemical synthesis and pharmaceutical industries across different regions.

Global Germane Tetrafluoride (GeF4) Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A colorless gas with a pungent smell, germane tetrafluoride is used as a fluorinating agent in organic synthesis.

99% Purity:

99% purity is a term used for tetrafluoride (GeF4) which has been purified to near-perfection. Tetrafluoride is manufactured by the reaction of hexafluoroethane with carbon dioxide at -30°C and has no commercial substitutes.

Above 99% Purity:

GeF4 is a chemical, which has a purity level of 99.999%. It is also called as tetrafluoride. Tetrafluoride (GeF4) can be used in the production of large area clean rooms and high-efficiency particulate air filters. GeF4 has been an essential component for manufacturing semiconductor devices and silicon wafers used in integrated circuits (IC).

Application Insights:

The others application segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2017 and is anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period. GeF4 has wide applications such as chemical synthesis, pharmaceuticals, coating/deposition etc. It is used as a catalyst in organic reactions and offers superior properties including low volatility and toxicity which makes it suitable for various applications.

GeF4 demand from other sources such as fluorocarbon production was 37 kilotons in 2016; however, this segment is expected to decline over the next few years due to rising geochemistry costs associated with it coupled with growing environmental concerns regarding its by-product emissions (GeH4). The aforementioned factors are projecteded to hamper market growth over the coming years.

Regional Analysis:

Germany accounted for the largest share in terms of both volume and revenue in 2017. The country is one of the leading GeF4 producers across the globe. It produced over 9,000 tons of GeF4 as a byproduct from its nuclear power plants between 2011 and 2015. Germany plans to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2022 at a cost exceeding USD X billion which will reduce production levels further to around 7,000 tons per year by 2020-21.

The market in France is expected to grow at an estimated CAGR of XX% over the forecast period on account rising demand for high purity products from chemical manufacturers along with increasing research & development activities related to pharmaceuticals and others sectors especially after 2018 U.S.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand from electronics and semiconductor industry for GeF4 as a precursor to manufacture silicon-germanium (SiGe) alloys used in high-performance transistors and integrated circuits.
  • Growing demand for GeF4 in optical fiber manufacturing to produce Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) and other optical devices.
  • Rising use of GeF4 in the production of polycrystalline silicon solar cells due to its ability to improve cell efficiency by suppressing light reflection from the surface of the cells.
  • Increasing application of GeF4 as a gas additive in metal processing industries to improve quality and properties of metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, and bronze.
