Pharmaceutical grade is used in the production of 2-chloronicotinic acid. It is a colorless crystalline solid and has a slightly sweet odor. However, the most commonly used method involves the fermentation of sugar to produce D-glucose which further gets converted to D-crystalline lactic acid which is then hydrolyzed to give 2-chloronicotinic acid (CPA).
