An acoustic pyrometer is a device that uses sound waves to measure the temperature of a material. It is important because it can be used to measure the temperature of materials that are too hot or too dangerous to touch.


Non-intrusive Type:


Non-intrusive type is a pyrometer used to measure the rate of combustion or burning in non-combustible materials. It works by measuring the heat generated when a known weight is dropped into a container of combustible material. The heat generated can be used to calculate the rate of combustion or burning and hence, can be utilized for various applications such as determining flammability limits of substances in storage tanks, pipes & fittings and other industrial processes that require fire testing.


Other:


Other is the sound produced by a speaker or an instrument that is not intelligible to human beings. The other sounds are measured by an acoustic pyrometer and analyzed in terms of temperature, density, and velocity.


Acoustic pyrometers measure the volume of sound waves in cubic meters (m3) at a given temperature and pressure. These devices are used for measuring sound absorption coefficient, which can be related to thermal properties such as heat capacity and emittance.
