3k is a term used for referring to the strength of carbon fiber. The higher the number, generally indicates better performance and/or quality of carbon fiber. For example, 3K means three times as strong as standard aramid fibers which can hold up to seven times its weight. It also has excellent properties such as high tensile strength, good compressive properties and low modulus which makes it ideal for use in aircraft components where high load factors are encountered frequently.
6k:
6k is a term used for referring to the specific size and quality of carbon fiber. The higher the number, generally signifies a more pure form of carbon fiber with less impurities (read: dirt). 6k means that only one out of every 10,000 fibers would be longer than 6 inches. In other words, it’s very rare to find any other material with such high purity levels as compared to 3K or 5K.
