Market Overview:
The global agricultural pheromone market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for effective and environment-friendly pest control methods. Additionally, the growing awareness about the benefits of using pheromones for pest control is also contributing to the growth of this market. On the basis of type, sex pheromones accounted for a major share of the global agricultural pheromone market in 2017. This segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2018 to 2030 due to its high efficacy in controlling pests.
Product Definition:
An agricultural pheromone is a chemical that is used to communicate with other members of the same species. These chemicals can be used to attract mates, warn of danger, or mark territory. Agricultural pheromones are important for maintaining communication within a population and coordinating activities like mating and pup rearing.
Sex Pheromones:
Sex pheromones refer to the chemicals released by an animal in response to sexual stimulation or ovulation. Pheromone is a chemical messenger that allows animals and plants to communicate with each other for reproductive purposes. There are two types of pheromones, behavioral and neuroendocrine. Behavioral pheromones are used by males during mating season whereas Neuroendocrine pheromones function throughout the year but are most active during breeding season.
Aggregation Pheromones:
Aggregation pheromones are chemical signals given off by an aggregation of insects such as wasps, bees, and ants. These signals play a significant role in the social life of these insects. They are used by the insect to communicate with other members about food sources, enemy presence, and so on. The communication is done through vibrations that travel from antenna to antenna in a colony.
Application Insights:
In terms of application, the global market is categorized into detection and monitoring, mass trapping, mating disruption and others. Mating disruption segment held the largest share in 2017. This can be attributed to growing use of pheromones for controlling insect pests that attack crops. For instance, Syngenta (India) Ltd., a subsidiary of Syngenta International AG developed an organic product named Orgasol for pest management in cotton fields which is based on natural sex pheromones of wasps to disrupt the life cycle of moths feeding on cotton plants (Zacharias et al., 2012).
Mating disruption has been proven effective against Helicoverpa armigera which attacks cereals & maize across the globe (Rice et al., 2015). Other applications include research studies related to behavior modification in animals including mice & rats; development of human odor-based marketing tools; study about factors affecting quality characteristics in fruits and vegetables such as size, color etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017. The region is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for agricultural products and rising awareness among farmers about latest technologies. Moreover, government initiatives coupled with strong distribution network of leading companies are expected to drive regional product demand over the forecast period.
North America accounted for a major share in terms of revenue due to high adoption rate of advanced technology across U.S.
Europe was valued at USD X million in 2017 owing herring fishery trade relations with Russia that has resulted into high consumption volume especially concerning Norway which accounts for maximum consumption followed by U.K.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for high quality and safe food products
- Growing population and rising income levels in developing countries
- Rapid urbanization and changing dietary habits
- Technological advancements in agricultural production practices
- Expansion of global trade
