Market Overview:
The global aircraft air start units market is estimated to be valued at US$ XX Mn in 2018 and is projected to reach US$ XX Mn by 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of X.X% during the forecast period. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for commercial and military aircraft across the globe. On the basis of type, the diesel-powered segment is expected to account for a larger share of the global aircraft air start units market in 2018. This can be attributed to its high efficiency and low emissions as compared with gasoline-powered engines. However, owing to stringent environmental regulations being implemented worldwide, there is an increasing trend towards adoption of gasoline-powered engines in this market segment. Based on application, civil airport accounted for a larger share of the global aircraft air start units market in 2017.
Product Definition:
An aircraft air start unit, also known as an auxiliary power unit (APU), is a small gas turbine engine used to start the main engines of a jetliner. The APU is also used to provide electrical power and air conditioning while the main engines are shut down.
Diesel:
Diesel is the fuel oil that is produced by processing crude oil. It has a high boiling point and low flash point. The ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) standard requires the sulfur content in diesel to be less than 0.03% by weight, which makes it suitable for use as an aircraft fuel since it meets all the requirements of ULSD including minimum vapor pressure, maximum combustion temperature, and optimal pour Point (the lowest possible).
Gasoline:
Gasoline is a fuel used in aircraft. It is also known as avgas, aviation spirit, or av gasoline. It can be classified as either petrol or distillate (diesel). The most common type of gasoline used in aircraft air start units market is jet A which consists of around 90% Aviation Gasoline and 10% Av gas.
Application Insights:
The business airport segment dominated the global aircraft air start units market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The growing number of transatlantic air travelers has resulted in an increased number of airports across both civil and business sectors. This, in turn, has boosted demand for AGSUs at these airports. Furthermore, governments around the world are making efforts to expand their existing commercial airport infrastructure by building new airports or expanding existing ones. All such initiatives are aimed at encouraging more airlines to operate from them which will eventually drive demand for AGSU over the next eight years or so.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global aircraft air start units market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The presence of a large number of airports, coupled with stringent environmental regulations by regulatory bodies such as EPA and DOT, has resulted in increased demand for alternative fuel vehicles at airport locations. Furthermore, increasing use of electric aircraft batteries due to their superior performance compared to lead-acid batteries is anticipated to further drive growth over the next eight years.
Asia Pacific is estimated to be one of the fastest growing regions during the forecast period owing to rapid development taking place at airports across India, China and Japan. In addition, rising passenger traffic on domestic routes within these countries will also drive product demand during this time frame.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for air travel: The global air travel market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% from 2016 to 2021, reaching a total value of 4 billion by 2021. This growth is being driven by the increasing number of passengers travelling by air, rising disposable incomes in developing countries, and the development of new airports and aviation infrastructure.
- Growing fleet size: Airlines are investing heavily in new aircraft in order to meet rising demand for air travel, and as a result the global fleet size is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3% from 2016 to 2021. This will create opportunities for aircraft air start units suppliers as airlines upgrade their fleets with more fuel-efficient aircraft that require fewer start-ups per flight hour.
- Rising fuel prices: The price of jet fuel has been on an upward trend since mid-2014, reaching its highest level in over two years in early 2017. This has led airlines to seek more efficient ways to start their aircraft engines, creating opportunities for suppliers of advanced aircraft air start units systems and components .
