Global Aircraft Braking Systems Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

An aircraft braking system is a mechanism used to slow or stop an aircraft. The three main types of aircraft braking systems are wheel brakes, spoilers, and thrust reversers. Wheel brakes use friction to slow the aircraft down. Spoilers use the airflow over the wings to create drag and slow the airplane down. Thrust reversers redirects engine exhaust flow to push against the air flowing over the wings, which also creates drag and slows the airplane down.

Aircraft Disc Brakes:

Aircraft disc brakes are the most advanced and largest technological advancement in aircraft braking technology. They have replaced the traditional hydraulic system used for braking. The primary function of an aircraft's braking system is to enable a safe landing after applying enough pressure to reduce the speed of an aircraft as required by Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR).

The conventional method used for slowing down a speeding Boeing 707 was achieved through two main hydraulic systems, one for each wheel.

Thrust Reversers:

Thrust reversers are aerodynamic devices that are used to generate significant force in a forward direction. They can be classified into two basic types, manual and automatic. An example of an automatic thrust reverser is the F-16 fighter jet’s flight control system which uses eight small rotors mounted on each wing for providing positive directional control during landing or when performing an evasive maneuver.

The primary function of a thrust reverser is to provide additional lift.

Application Insights:

The civil aviation segment dominated the global aircraft braking systems market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. Increasing air traffic owing to rise in passenger travel demand, coupled with expansion of airports, is anticipated to drive the segment growth. Aircraft disc brakes are being widely used for landing and take-off on account of their high performance and durability.

Thrust reversers are primarily used for deceleration or reversal of a moving aircraft when its speed becomes too great for normal operation of engines or propellers through jet blast from conventional engines. They provide thrust vectoring by means of two reverser nozzles that direct exhaust gases upward so as to provide additional deceleration at the rear end portion of an aircraft where it matters most such as tail section, engine pods, doors & ramp entryways etc., thereby providing enhanced safety during emergencies or evacuations while reducing fuel consumption & emissions significantly.

Regional Analysis:

North America accounted for the largest share of over 40% in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its lead throughout the forecast period owing to increasing air travel and rapid growth of commercial aviation industry. Europe aircraft braking systems market is estimated to grow at a CAGR exceeding 6% from 2018 to 2030 owing to stringent government regulations regarding aircraft safety and rising demand for efficient braking solutions on board planes.

Asia Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing regional segment, with a CAGR exceeding 7% from 2018 till 2030 due primarily high growth rate in China, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan; coupled with growing adoption by airlines operating within Asia Pacific region as well as across international routes connecting Asian countries.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for air travel: The global air travel industry is growing at a rapid pace, owing to the increasing number of passengers travelling for both business and leisure purposes. This is expected to drive the demand for aircraft braking systems in the coming years.
  • Technological advancements: Aircraft braking systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated with each passing year, with new technologies being developed to improve performance and safety. This is likely to boost the growth of the market in the near future.
  • Stringent safety regulations: Governments across the world are implementing stringent safety regulations for aviation industry, which is drivingthe demandfor aircraft braking systems. This trendisexpectedtogrowinthefuture aswell, propellingthemarketgrowth further .
