Aldehyde tanning agents are a type of chromium compound used in the tanning industry. They are important because they help to improve the color and appearance of leather.


Formaldehyde:


It is a colorless, toxic, flammable liquid. It has a strong odor similar to that of garlic or fenugreek and it's corrosive nature makes it unfit for use in products where people may be exposed to direct contact such as furniture polish or floor polishes.


Glutaraldehyde:


Glutaraldehyde, also known as 2-hydroxypropyl acetate, is an aldehyde compound and it has a strong odor similar to that of gasoline. It is widely used in the tanning process along with other chemicals such as formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide. Aldehyde tanning agents are used for the treatment of human skin so that they acquire a tanned appearance.


Application Insights:


Pretanning agents were the major application segment and accounted for over 60% of the total revenue in 2017. Formaldehyde is used to cross-link proteins, which results in leather with longer lifespan; whereas, glutaraldehyde helps remove waxes from animal hides to give it a glossy finish.
