Market Overview:
The global animal insulin market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for animal-based insulin products due to their high efficacy and safety as compared to human-based insulin products. In addition, the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus in animals is also contributing significantly towards the growth of this market. Based on type, porcine insulin held a major share of the global animal insulin market in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period. This can be attributed to factors such as rising awareness about porcine-derived insulins among veterinarians and pet owners, growing demand for pork meat across regions, and easy availability of porcine-derived insulins compared with other types of animal-based insulins.
Product Definition:
Animal insulin is a hormone that is produced in the pancreas of vertebrates and used in the treatment of diabetes. It lowers blood sugar levels by stimulating the absorption of glucose from the blood into cells.
Porcine Insulin:
Porcine insulin is a form of bovine insulin, which is the same as human insulin but with different quantities of antibodies. It has been used in humans for many years and currently it's being used in various species including swine, poultry and cattle. Porcine insulins are widely used by people suffering from diabetes to treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) caused due to illness or injury.
Bovine Insulin:
Bovine insulin is a form of bovine milk insulin. It is produced by the pancreas of bovines (cattle). Bovine insulin has an amino acid structure similar to human insulin and thus it can be used as a replacement for human analogs in many applications. Bovine insulins are available in various forms such as short-acting, intermediate-acting, and long-acting types.
Application Insights:
The application segment includes humans and animals. The human insulin market is segregated into type I and other types. Type I diabetes has a higher prevalence rate as compared to other applications. According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 617 million people were affected by diabetes globally in 2018, of which 86% were type II patients and 14% were type I patients.
Prevalence of animal insulin usage in non-food purposes such as companion animals or show animals is low as compared to food applications due to cost constraints associated with the former category.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global animal insulin market in 2017. The presence of a large number of manufacturers coupled with high healthcare expenditure and technological advancements are some factors attributing to its largest share. In addition, increasing demand for meat products is expected to drive the regional market further. Asia Pacific is estimated to be the fastest-growing region during the forecast period owing to rising diabetic population and awareness about animal insulins among patients and physicians, improving economic conditions in countries such as India & China, etc. Moreover, growing exports from developed countries such as Australia & New Zealand will fuel growth further due to their lower prices compared with that offered by U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing prevalence of diabetes: The global prevalence of diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. This is expected to drive the demand for animal insulin in the coming years.
- Rising awareness about animal insulin: There is a growing awareness among people about the benefits of using animal insulin over human insulin. This is likely to boost the demand for this product in the near future.
- Technological advancements: The technological advancements in the field of diabetes care are helping to improve the efficacy and safety profile of animal insulin products. This is likely to propel their growth in the coming years.
