Market Overview:
The global anionic starches market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for anionic starches from the food, paper, pharmaceutical, and textile industries. Anionic starches are used as thickeners, binders, and stabilizers in various applications. They are also used as adhesives in the paper industry and as excipients in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, they are used as texturizing agents and emulsifiers in various food applications such as sauces, dressings, bakery products, confectionery items etc.
Product Definition:
Anionic starch is a type of starch that has been chemically modified to have negative charges on its surface. This modification makes the starch soluble in water and increases its adhesive properties. Anionic starches are used in many industrial applications, including papermaking, textiles, adhesives, and cosmetics.
Phosphorylated Starch:
Phosphorylated starch is a product that contains phosphates (PO4) group. It is usually produced by treating amylose with acid, such as sulfuric or hydrochloric acid. The reaction takes place in water and results in the formation of highly soluble and hygroscopic salts, such as ammonium sulfate and calcium phosphate.
Carboxyalkylated Starch:
Carboxyalkylated starch is a new form of anionic starch developed by the modification of regular tapioca starch. It has several advantages over conventional starches such as it can be used at high concentrations without any adverse effects on the end product and it offers improved rheological properties.
The global carboxyalkylated starch market size was valued at USD 35 million in 2015.
Application Insights:
The paper industry emerged as the largest application segment and accounted for over 30% of the global market share in terms of revenue in 2017. The product is used to manufacture tissue papers, newsprint, copypapers, and specialty papers such as those used in packaging. Increasing demand for high-quality paper from various end-use industries including packaging & printing inkjet printers is expected to drive growth during the forecast period.
Anionic starches are also widely utilized within the food industry owing to their ability to act as a binder and strengthener which helps improve texture properties such as strength and viscosity without adding excessive calories or reducing nutritional content. They are broadly classified into two categories namely carboxylic acid based anionic starch (CAS) and phosphoric acid based anionic starch (PAS).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global anionic starches market in 2017. The region is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing product demand from various end-use industries, such as textile and pharmaceutical. In addition, rising disposable income coupled with expanding population in emerging countries of Asia Pacific is expected to drive product demand further.
Europe accounted for a major share of revenue in 2017 on account of high consumption levels observed for carboxyalkylated starch products, especially in food processing applications and pharmaceutical industry. North America also contributed significantly towards revenue generation owing to growing consumer spending on packaged food products and medicines coupled with increased use of paper industry which requires phosphorylated starch as a binder ingredient.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for convenience foods: The growing trend of busy lifestyles has led to an increase in the demand for convenience foods. Anionic starches are used as thickeners and stabilizers in these types of food products, which is driving their growth.
- Rising awareness about the health benefits of anionic starches: There is a growing awareness among consumers about the health benefits of anionic starches, such as weight management and blood sugar control. This is leading to an increase in their demand, thereby driving market growth.
- Growing popularity of plant-based diets: The popularity of plant-based diets is increasing around the world, due to their health benefits. Anionic starches are used as thickeners and binders in many plant-based food products, which is contributing to their growth.
