Market Overview:
The global anode active material market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for electric vehicles and batteries. The market is segmented by type, application, and region. By type, the market is segmented into natural graphite, artificial graphite, activated carbon, carbon black and other materials. By application, the market is divided into batteries and other applications such as capacitors and fuel cells.
Product Definition:
The anode active material is the material used in anode of a battery. The most common type of anode active material is graphite, which is used in most consumer-grade lithium ion batteries. Other materials that can be used include silicon, tin and lead.
Natural Graphite:
Natural graphite is the raw material used for manufacturing anode active materials. It has a high content of carbon and low content of hydrogen. Natural graphite is mined from deposits formed in the earth’s surface. The mining process involves washing, screening, and pulverizing the earth’s surface to extract natural graphite which can be further processed to manufacture anode active materials for use in lithium-ion batteries (LiB).
Artificial Graphite:
Artificial graphite is a type of carbon with an extremely high content of sp2 bonds as compared to natural graphite. It has a structure similar to that of natural graphite, but the composition and properties are different. The production process for artificial (synthetic) graphite is very different from the production process for natural (organic)graphite.
Application Insights:
The battery application segment led the global anode active material market in 2017 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for electric vehicles, which require large amount of batteries. Batteries are one of the most important components in any electric vehicle as they provide power during acceleration and braking systems. Increasing number of manufacturing facilities for batteries across various countries has resulted in high product demand globally, especially from China, South Korea and Japan regions where automotive production is high compared to other parts of world such as Europe or North America region where automotive production is less than other parts globally speaking therefore resulting into higher product penetration rate globally with respect to battery applications worldwide.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is home to several emerging economies, including China, India, South Korea and Indonesia. Rapid industrialization coupled with increasing demand for consumer electronics has resulted in a growing battery industry across Asia Pacific. This growth can be attributed to natural resources such as coal bed methane (CBM), which acts as a feedstock for producing anode active material used across batteries.
The presence of key manufacturers such as LG Chem Inc.; Samsung SDI Co., Ltd; Panasonic Corporation; Fujitsu General Batteries Ltd.; and Amperex Technology Limited within Asia Pacific has led to high product penetration across various end-use industries such as automotive, portable devices etc., thereby driving regional market growth over the forecast period. Increasing government funding towards research & development activities aimed at developing cost-effective energy storage systems will further drive regional demand over the next eight years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for electric vehicles: The global market for electric vehicles is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 14% during the forecast period. This will lead to an increase in the demand for anode active materials, as they are used in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries.
- Growing investment in renewable energy: Governments and private investors are increasingly investing in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. This is expected to drive the growth of the anode active material market, as these materials are used in battery packs for solar and wind applications.
- Rising demand from Asia Pacific: The Asia Pacific region is currently leading the global growth of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources due to its high population density and rapid economic development. This will create opportunities for players operating in the anode active material market over the next few years.
