Product Definition:
Aquaponics is a sustainable agriculture system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish, prawns, and crayfish in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water). The key benefit of aquaponics is that it recirculates up to 95% of the water used, compared to traditional agriculture which wastes large quantities of water due to evaporation and runoff. Aquaponics also uses 10% of the energy required for traditional farming, making it a more environmentally friendly option. Fish waste provides the nutrients needed for plants to grow, while the plants clean the water for the fish. This closed-loop system results in a self-sufficient food production system that can be adapted to any climate.
Media Filled Growbeds (MFG):
Media Filled Growbeds (MFG) are used in hydroponics to grow plants without soil. It is an inert and sterile medium that holds the nutrients for plant growth. The basic ingredients of Media Filled Growbeds include coconut coir, rock phosphate, perlite or sand, and water. These ingredients when added to the grow bed create a micro-soil environment around the roots of plants thereby increasing its nutrient value as well as water retention capacity.
Nutrient Film Technique (NFT):
Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) is a method of growing plants in nutrient solution inside a plastic film. Nutrients such as phosphorous, potassium, and magnesium are provided to the plant through the water flow from an aqua system. The technique helps to grow plants faster with more yield and stronger stems by providing optimum nutrients required for healthy growth of the plant.
