Automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is a laboratory technique used to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to antimicrobial agents. AST is performed by automated systems using microplates or strips with wells that contain different concentrations of the test agent. Bacteria are grown on the plates and then exposed to different concentrations of the antimicrobial agent. The MIC values for each concentration are recorded and compared against those for known susceptible strains of bacteria.
