Market Overview:

The global automotive data cables market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, rising trend of vehicle electrification, and growing demand for advanced safety features in vehicles. Based on type, the global automotive data cables market is segmented into coaxial cables, low voltage differential signaling (LVDS), Ethernet, flexray, controller area network flexible data-rate (CAN-FD), controller area network (CAN), and others. Ethernet is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period owing to its high bandwidth capacity and ability to connect multiple devices simultaneously. Based on application, commercial vehicles are expected to hold a major share of the global automotive data cables market during the forecast period.

Global Automotive Data Cables Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

An automotive data cable is a type of electrical wiring used in automobiles to connect various electronic devices. The importance of automotive data cables lies in their ability to transmit power and data between devices.

Coaxial Cables:

Coaxial cables are used for transferring radio frequency (RF) signals and analog video signals from one end to the other. Coaxial cable consists of a copper wire that is surrounded by an insulation layer on both sides, this creates a protective envelope around the signal which prevents it from external interference. The two ends of coaxial cable are called as connectors, they can be connected to devices such as television receivers, VCRs or computers through RF modulator and demodulator.

Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS):

Differential signaling is a method of transmitting data using two wires, one positive and the other negative. The signals are sent over the two wires by adding or subtracting a small voltage to or from the signal respectively. This allows several lanes of data transmission simultaneously using only one cable for power and control purposes.

The cables that use differential signaling have several advantages such as high bandwidth, low latency time (time between sending a command and receiving an answer), flexible length, etc.

Application Insights:

The commercial vehicles segment led the global automotive data cables market in 2017 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for advanced safety features, such as blind-spot detection and lane departure warning systems, which require high bandwidth communication between ECUs. Moreover, growing adoption of these devices for navigation and tracking purposes is expected to drive demand over the coming years.

Passenger vehicle applications accounted for more than 50% share in 2017 owing to an increase in entertainment systems with integrated infotainment system that utilize data cabling solutions among other components such as Wi-Fi hot spots and Bluetooth connectivity modules. Furthermore, these cables are also used extensively across various safety & security functions including airbag deployment/removal detection along with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Regional Analysis:

The North American region dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing investments in R&D for developing advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems. Moreover, presence of key automotive manufacturers such as General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Tesla Inc., among others is also likely to contribute towards regional growth.

However, Asia Pacific region is anticipated to witness significant growth during the forecast period owing to rising demand from emerging economies such as China and India for high-end automobiles with enhanced safety features. In addition, growing adoption of electric vehicles due their lower emissions are further expected drive regional demand during the forecast period.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Rising demand for infotainment systems in automobiles
  • Growing trend of vehicle electrification and automation
  • Proliferation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in automobiles
  • Increasing adoption of wireless charging technology
