Market Overview:
The global aviation leasing market is expected to grow from USD XX billion in 2018 to USD XX billion by 2030, at a CAGR of X.X%. The growth of the aviation leasing market can be attributed to the increase in demand for air travel, rise in passenger traffic, and growth of the airline industry. Based on type, the aviation leasing market is segmented into dry leasing and wet leasing. Dry leasing is further classified into short-term lease and long-term lease. Wet leasing is further classified into ACMI (aircraft component management) lease and block charter lease. Based on application, the aviation leasing market is segmented into wide body aircraft (WA), narrow body aircraft (NA), very large aircraft (VLA), business jet (BJ), and others.
Product Definition:
Aviation leasing is the process of obtaining an airplane or helicopter through a lease agreement. The importance of aviation leasing is that it provides an opportunity for businesses and individuals to obtain the use of an aircraft without having to purchase it. This can be beneficial for those who do not have the funds available to outright purchase an aircraft, or for those who only need access to an airplane or helicopter on a temporary basis.
Dry Leasing:
Dry leasing is a form of aircraft rental where the lessee does not have any rights to or interests in the lease asset and is merely responsible for paying rent for using the assets under lease. The lessor purchases the assets from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and then leases them to an aviation company, which may be a airline, discount airline service provider or another commercial passenger & cargo flying company.
Wet Leasing:
Wet leasing is a type of aircraft leasing in which the lessor leases the aircraft with all its accessories and options from the lessee. In wet leasing, lease payments are made directly to the lessor and not to airline operators. The lessee must make sure that it has enough liquidity or financial resources to pay for its lease commitment as well as any additional costs that may arise during the lease period.
Application Insights:
The wide body aircraft application segment led the market and accounted for more than 60.0% share of the global revenue in 2017. The growth can be attributed to an increase in demand from major airlines including American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines (JAL), LAN Chile and Lufthansa among others.
Wide body aircraft are typically leased with a term of 12 to 24 months depending upon its size and usage pattern as well as its fuel efficiency which enables operators fill up empty seats on these planes thereby increasing their revenues by several thousand dollars per flight hour. In addition, widebody leasing has been gaining popularity due to various benefits such as flexible operating cost structure that enables lessor-less debtor optimization while obtaining maximum revenues; operational flexibility offered through utilization of different types including wet lease; reduced capital expenditure required for purchasing an airplane; ability to utilize existing airport facilities resulting in increased competition between airports regarding offering better terms for aircraft parking etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific aviation leasing market is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The regional growth can be attributed to increasing demand for aircraft financing in emerging economies, such as China and India. In 2016, Asia Pacific accounted for a share of more than 30% of the total revenue generated by aviation leasing globally. Moreover, rising disposable income coupled with growing business process outsourcing (BPO) sector in these countries is anticipated to fuel the demand further over the next eight years.
The European region dominated by nations such as Germany and U.K., which are among top five global exporters of general aviation aircraft; has also witnessed an increase in sales activities across all segments including light single-engine planes through wet lease agreements since past few years owing to dearth of new aircraft deliveries from OEMs or original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for air travel: The global air travel market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% from 2016 to 2021. This growth is primarily driven by the increasing number of passengers travelling by air and the rise in disposable income levels in emerging markets.
- Proliferation of low-cost carriers: The growth of low-cost carriers (LCCs) has led to an increase in demand for aircraft leasing as these airlines prefer leased aircraft over owned aircraft, as it allows them to keep their costs down.
- Expansion of airport infrastructure: Airport infrastructure is expanding rapidly across the world, especially in developing countries, which is leading to an increase in demand for new aircrafts and related services such as leasing and maintenance/repair/overhaul (MRO).
- Technological advancements: Aircraft manufacturers are introducing new technologies such as fuel-efficient engines and lightweight materials that are helping reduce operating costs and improve performance metrics, thereby driving demand for newer generation aircrafts leased by airlines worldwide. 5 Emerging economies: The aviation industry is witnessing strong growth rates in emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil etc., which offers significant opportunities for players operating in the aviation leasing market
