Market Overview:
The global betel leaf oil market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for betel leaf oil in food additive, cosmetic and perfumes, pharmaceutical and other applications. Betel leaf oil is obtained through light distillation or heavy distillation process. The light distillation process yields a higher quality product as compared to the heavy distillation process. However, the light distillation process is more expensive as it uses more refined raw materials. Regionally, Asia Pacific dominates the global betel leaf oil market followed by Europe and North America respectively.
Product Definition:
Betel leaf oil is an essential oil that is extracted from the leaves of the betel plant. The oil has a number of uses, including as a flavoring agent, in perfumery, and in traditional medicine. The oil is also used to make soap and other personal care products.
Light Distillation:
Light distillation is a process to extract oil from leaves of the betel palm tree. It is also known as solar distillation or dry distillation and basically involves vaporization of oils at a high temperature. The extracted oil then gets reduced to its base components which include alcohol and water.
The process has several advantages such as it does not use any harmful chemicals, it's environment friendly, produces low toxic fumes, requires less time & energy.
Heavy Distillation:
Heavy distillation is a process used to extract essential oils from various plants. It involves the use of hot air as a medium for vaporization and condensation of plant materials which are then collected in an oil form. The main objective behind this technique is to separate volatile components (such as terpenes, ketones, alcohols, and esters) that may be hazardous to health from the final product.
Application Insights:
The food additive application segment led the global market in 2017. Betel leaf oil is used as a flavoring agent and to improve the taste of foods, such as salad dressings, sauces, soups and chocolates. The cosmetic and perfumes application segment is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to its high demand from countries like India, China Japan Malaysia Singapore etc. where chewing tobacco or paan products are popular among women aged 35 years & above group who chew betel leaves for improving their looks according to local tradition & culture.
The pharmaceutical segment accounted for 6% share of the overall revenue in 2017 due to extensive usage of betel leaf oil capsules and tablets for treating various diseases related gum disease cold sores skin infections etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017. The region is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to rapid urbanization and increasing disposable income of consumers. Moreover, rising demand for food flavors and fragrances due to changing consumer preferences is anticipated to drive the regional market over the forecast period.
The product demand in Europe was valued at USD X million in 2017 owing to its use as a flavoring ingredient for cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products consumed across various countries including Spain, Italy, Germany among others. Betel leaf oil finds application as an additive in chewing gum bases produced by companies such as Wrigley’s and Mars Incorporated among others due to its abilityto increase saliva production which helps prevent tooth decay among consumers aged 6+ years thereby boosting product consumption across this region (Europe).
Growth Factors:
