Market Overview:
The global bio-based rubber market is estimated to be valued at US$ XX Mn in 2018 and is projected to reach US$ XX Mn by 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for environment-friendly products and stringent regulations on the use of synthetic rubber. The bio-based rubber market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, EPDM Rubber accounted for a major share in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance throughout the forecast period. SBR Rubber held second largest share in 2017 owing to its properties such as high abrasion resistance and good tear strength. However, other types are projected to exhibit higher CAGR during 2018–2030 due their growing demand from various end users industries such as construction & infrastructure, automotive tires etc. On the basis of application, automobile tires held dominant position in 2017 with highest revenue share followed by household appliances & construction applications respectively.
Product Definition:
Bio-based rubber is a type of rubber that is derived from plant based materials. It can be used for a variety of purposes, including automotive applications and medical devices. Bio-based rubber is important because it is environmentally friendly and can help reduce the amount of petroleum based products that are used.
EPDM Rubber:
Polyisoprene or EPDM rubber is a synthetic elastomer, which was first manufactured by the Sichuan Chemical Corporation in China. It is also called as Polyisoprene Rubber (PIR) and EPDM is the short name for this product.
SBR Rubber:
SBR rubber is a synthetic elastomer, which was first developed by the S.B. Chemicals Company in the early 1950s as an alternative to natural rubber for use in tire manufacturing. The company later on acquired by Eastman Chemical Company and is now known as SBR Global Inc., which has its manufacturing facilities located in Clermont, Florida, U.S.
Application Insights:
The global bio-based rubber market has witnessed significant growth in recent years on account of increasing demand for sustainable products in the automotive, construction and other industries. In addition, growing environmental concerns regarding the use of fossil fuel derivatives as well as reducing greenhouse emissions have also driven consumer preferences towards sustainable alternatives. This trend is expected to continue over the forecast period with rising demand from various end-use industries including automotive and others.
Automotive tires were estimated to be one of the largest application segments with a share of 29.1% in 2017 on account of high product performance exhibited during tests carried out by major automobile manufacturers across various regions globally including North America and Europe.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest market for global bio-based rubber in 2016, accounting for a share of over 45%. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. This can be attributed to various factors such as increasing automotive production and tire manufacturing in China and India coupled with growing construction industry.
The European market also accounted for a significant share of global demand due to stringent regulations regarding carbon emissions by governments across the region. Europe has been at the forefront of implementing numerous environmental initiatives that are likely to have a positive impact on product demand in this region. For instance, according to data published by OICA, between January 2014 and September 2015 SBR consumption increased by nearly 12% compared with 2013 while EPDM consumption remained unchanged during this period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for bio-based rubber from the automotive industry as a replacement for conventional rubber
- Growing demand for eco-friendly and biodegradable products
- Rising awareness about the benefits of bio-based rubber over traditional rubber
- Technological advancements in the production of bio-based rubber
- Government initiatives and regulations supporting the use of bio-based materials
