Market Overview:
The global bioabsorbable vascular stents market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.8% from 2018 to 2030. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases, technological advancements in bioabsorbable vascular stents, and rising demand for minimally invasive procedures. However, the high cost of treatment and limited reimbursement policies are restraining the growth of this market. Based on type, the global bioabsorbable vascular stents market is segmented into polymer-based bioabsorbable stents and metal-based bioabsorbable stents.
Product Definition:
A bioabsorbable vascular stent is a type of stent that is made from a material that will dissolve over time after it has been placed in the body. This type of stent is often used to keep blood vessels open in patients who have had a heart attack or who are at risk for one.
Polymer-Based Bioabsorbable Stents:
Polymer-based bioabsorbable stents are made of polymers and have the ability to degrade or biodegrade in a predictable manner. They are used as scaffolds that support cells and promote healing by restricting bleeding, maintaining pressure, and preventing re-accumulation of blood clotting factors. Polymer-based bioabsorbable stents can be customized for use in various applications such as orthopedic, neurovascular & urological procedures.
Metal-Based Bioabsorbable Stents:
Metal-based bioabsorbable stents are used in the treatment of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The product is made up of biocompatible metals such as stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloys, chromium alloys and copper. These metal-based stents can be taken out after 6 to 12 months with minimal risk for the patient.
Application Insights:
The coronary artery segment dominated the global market in terms of revenue share in 2017. This is due to a high incidence of coronary artery diseases, which are the most common type of all heart diseases. According to data published by WHO, it has been estimated that globally around 370,000 deaths occur due to these diseases every year.
Moreover, increasing awareness about cardiovascular disease and its management is expected to boost product demand over the forecast period. In addition, bioabsorbable stents have been found effective in reducing long-term side effects as well as complications when compared with conventional metal or polymeric-based stents that are used for treating this condition. These factors are anticipated to increase market penetration over the forecast period (see Table 1).
Table 1: Comparison between conventional metal or polymer-based vascular implants.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to favorable healthcare policies, increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and presence of major market players such as Boston Scientific Corporation; Medtronic; Zimmer Biomet; and Abbott. Moreover, growing number of FDA approvals for new products is also expected to drive the regional growth over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness lucrative growth during the forecast period due to rising geriatric population with cardiac problems coupled with improving economic conditions in emerging countries such as China and India. In addition, rapidly developing healthcare infrastructure along with increasing medical tourism are some other factors driving this regional demand.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)
- Rising geriatric population
- Growing demand for minimally invasive procedures
- Technological advancements in bioabsorbable vascular stents
- increasing healthcare expenditure
