Product Definition:
Biogas liquefaction is the process of converting biogas into a liquid fuel. This can be done by heating the gas until it liquefies, or by compressing it and cooling it to a very low temperature. The liquid fuel can then be used in engines, turbines, or generators. Biogas liquefaction is important because it allows us to use the energy in biogas more efficiently. It also makes transportation and storage of the gas easier.
Cryogenic Technology:
Cryogenic technology is the lowest attainable temperature in a material system. It is used to freeze or cool materials down to temperatures as low as possible without liquefaction. In other words, it's the opposite of what happens when you boil water: steam. Cryogenic technology has been around for quite some time and was first discovered by accident (as most things in science do).
Conventional Upgrading Technology:
Conventional upgrading technology is used in biogas liquefaction process to produce upgraded biofuel. It includes thermal and non-thermal methods. Conventional upgrading technology can be applied for any feedstock including animal dung, crop waste, wood chips or pellets, sewage sludge and other organic materials.
The conventional upgrading technologies are classified into two major categories as wet processes and dry processes based on the method of chemical synthesis of fuels from biomass/waste material.
Application Insights:
Car, train and ship were the major application segments in 2016. Biogas is mainly used for power generation in ships, trains and cars. In 2016, car was the largest application segment with a share of over 50% in that year. Increasing use of liquefied natural gas as fuel in vehicles is expected to drive demand over the forecast period.
Increasing use of LNG as fuel by road transport trucks across countries such as Japan and China on account of its lower carbon emissions is expected to drive market growth globally over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period. The region’s growth can be attributed to increasing awareness regarding biogas production and utilization in countries such as India, China, and Japan. Furthermore, government initiatives for promoting sustainable energy sources are projected to fuel industry expansion over the coming years. For instance, in September 2016 ‘16th Five Year Plan’ focused on developing clean energy sources was launched by the Government of China which includes promotion of biogas projects across rural areas.
