Market Overview:
The global bulk ferroalloys market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for ferroalloys from the iron and steel industry, as well as other applications such as alloys, wires, and others. Ferrosilicon is the most commonly used type of bulk ferroalloy and is expected to dominate the market during the forecast period. Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region in terms of revenue growth, followed by Europe.
Product Definition:
A bulk ferroalloy is a material consisting of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, that are combined in order to improve the physical or chemical properties of the alloy. Bulk ferroalloys are important for several reasons. First, they can be used to improve the strength and toughness of metals. Second, they can help reduce costs by improving the efficiency of manufacturing processes.
Ferrosilicon:
Ferrosilicon is a ferric hydroxide-based alloy and has the composition of FeSi2. It occurs in nature as the mineral sylferite. Ferrosilicon exhibits properties such as corrosion resistance, high melting point, electrical resistivity and hardness. These properties have made it useful in manufacturing various products such as automotive parts, kitchen utensils, tools & hardware and industrial machinery among others over the past few years.
Ferromanganese:
Ferromanganese is an iron manganese alloy and is used in the production of various ferroalloys. It contains about 65% to 70% manganese by weight with the balance made up from iron, nickel, chromium and titanium. Ferromanganese has a high content of carbon along with significant quantities of silicon and oxygen which makes it different from other ferroalloys in terms of composition.
Application Insights:
The iron and steel application segment accounted for the largest volume share of over 50.0% in 2017. The segment is expected to witness growth on account of increasing demand for ferroalloys from construction, automotive and energy sectors coupled with stable production levels in major economies such as China, India and Brazil.
The product has a wide scope of application in the manufacturing process of various steel products including rails, beams, bars & sections (excluding square bars), angles & sections (excluding angle irons) and heavy plates & section among others. The growing demand for these products from infrastructure sector is expected to drive the market over the forecast period.
Increasing investments by governments across various countries to enhance railway infrastructural development are likely to propel industry expansion over next few years thereby driving overall market growth during this period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the leading regional market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The region accounted for a volume share of 68.2% in 2017 owing to increasing demand from end-use industries, such as automotive, construction, consumer goods and electronics. China is projected to remain a key consumer due to its large steel production capacity and growing infrastructure needs across the globe.
The European market consists of major countries including Russia, Germany, Italy and U.K.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the automotive and construction industries
- Growing urbanization and industrialization in developing countries
- Rising income levels of consumers in emerging markets
- Proliferation of new applications for ferroalloys in end-use industries
- Technological advancements that improve the performance of ferroalloys
