Market Overview:

The global calcined kaolin market is estimated to be valued at US$ XX Mn in 2018 and is projected to reach US$ XX Mn by 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of X.X% during the forecast period. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for calcined kaolin from various end-use industries such as paper and pulp, coating, refractory and others. On the basis of type, absorbency accounted for a major share of the global calcined kaolin market in 2017. This can be attributed to its high absorption capacity which makes it suitable for use in various applications such as paper and pulp, coating and others. In terms of application, paper and pulp segment held a dominant position in 2017 owing to its growing demand from various end-use industries across the globe.

Global Calcined Kaolin Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A kaolin is a clay mineral, also called china clay. Kaolinite is the most common member of the group, accounting for about 80% of production. The name is derived from Kao-Ling (mountain ridge), a village in southern China where this type of clay was first found. Kaolin deposits are mined by both surface and underground methods.

Absorbency:

Absorbency is a property of clay that enables it to swelling up with water and hold the same amount of moisture as before. Clay particles absorbent are coated with organic chemicals, which makes them more hydrophilic. The swelling clay particles can attract and hold water molecules in between its layers, thus increasing its overall capacity to store water.

Inhibitory:

Inhibitory is a property of clay that retards the speed at which it can react with other materials. In Calcined Kaolin industry, inhibitory properties are used to control the reaction rate between calcium carbonate and organic chemicals. The product has applications in paints, plastics, adhesives & sealants and coatings industries as an additive for plasticizers, extenders for resins or plastisols in epoxy resin and polyurethane coatings respectively.

Application Insights:

Paper and pulp was the largest application segment in 2017. The product is used to manufacture paper, tissue, toiletries tissues and facial tissues among other products such as packaging materials and engineering ceramics. Calcined kaolin provides high whiteness (brightness) which helps to produce quality end-products with low cost per unit area when compared with raw materials.

The coating segment is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for coatings in various industries including building & construction, automotive, industrial machinery and appliances among others.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to rising demand from China, India, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia. Asia Pacific is projected to register a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period owing to increasing industrialization coupled with growing population in these countries.

The Chinese government has been taking several initiatives for promoting domestic production by reducing import taxes on calcined kaolin products as well as encouraging investments through tax benefits & exemptions and financial incentives such as low-interest rates & bank loans which will have a positive impact on industry expansion over the next eight years.

Europe accounted for more than 20% share of global revenue in 2017 due to high consumption from Germany, Italy.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand from the construction industry for use in paints, coatings, and plasters.
  • Growing demand from the paper manufacturing industry as a filler to improve the quality of paper products.
  • Rising demand for kaolin in the ceramics and sanitaryware industries due to its properties such as whiteness, brightness, purity, and low oil absorption.
  • Increasing use of calcined kaolin in plastics manufacturing as a filler to improve product properties such as stiffness, impact resistance, and heat distortion temperature (HDT).
