Market Overview:
The global cancer supportive care market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.8% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing incidence of cancer, growing awareness about cancer supportive care, and technological advancements in the field of oncology. Based on type, the global cancer supportive care market is segmented into nonsteroidal erythropoietin stimulating agents, opioid analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-infective drugs, bisphosphonates, anti-emetics drugs monoclonal antibodies and granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF). Nonsteroidal erythropoietin stimulating agents are expected to be the fastest growing segment during the forecast period owing to their ability to improve red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels in patients with anemia caused by chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Based on application, lung cancer is estimated to be the largest segment in 2018 followed by breast cancer.
Product Definition:
Cancer supportive care is the term given to a range of interventions that are used to improve the quality of life for people living with cancer. It includes treatments and services aimed at preventing or managing the side effects of cancer and its treatment, such as pain relief, nausea and vomiting control, and emotional support.
Nonsteroidal Erythropoietin Stimulating Agents:
Nonsteroidal erythropoietin (NSE) stimulating agents are used to stimulate the immune system to produce more red blood cells. The normal function of this protein is to help the body get enough oxygen levels by removing worn out or damaged blood cells from the circulation. NSE is produced naturally in the kidney, liver and gut of humans; however, in some people it does not function normally due to a lack of certain proteins that are supposed to help regulate its production.
Opioid Analgesics:
Analgesics is a drug that reduces or eliminates the pain. The most commonly used analgesic in cancer supportive care is opioids, which are also known as pain-killers. Opioids are semi-synthetic and synthetic drugs that bind to opioid receptors (ORs) in the brain stem to reduce or eliminate chronic pain. Some of the commonly used opioids include hydrocodone, oxycodone, and fentanyl; they are all opioid agonists.
Application Insights:
The lung cancer segment dominated the market in 2017 owing to the increasing prevalence of the disease. According to data published by WHO, in 2018, around 210,170 new cases of lung cancer were reported worldwide. In addition, as per American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 120,000 people are diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer and 60,000 die from this disease annually. Thus, rising incidence coupled with high mortality rates is expected to drive demand for oncology supportive care products during the forecast period.
Breast cancer is also anticipated to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period due largely to increased awareness about early detection and treatment options available for this condition.S women develop invasive breast carcinoma which accounts for 40% of all female cancers and 2 out of 3 breast carcinomas occur in women above 50 years age group globally1!.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. This can be attributed to the presence of a large number of supportive care centers and organizations, such as American Cancer Society (ACS), which provide free information regarding cancer-related topics and support services to patients throughout North America. In addition, government initiatives that offer financial assistance for medical treatments are also expected to drive growth over the forecast period. For instance, under Medicare Part B coverage is provided for diagnostic tests recommended by oncologists or primary care physicians that are considered reasonable by Medicare.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of cancer: The increasing incidence of cancer is the major growth driver for the global cancer supportive care market. According to a study by the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that around 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017 and around 609,640 people will die from this disease. This high incidence rate is expected to drive demand for various types of cancer supportive care products and services in the coming years.
- Growing awareness about available treatments: There has been a growing awareness among patients about available treatments for different types of cancers in recent years. This has led to an increase in demand for various types of cancer supportive care products and services worldwide.
