Calcium carbide is a chemical compound, which occurs in nature as the mineral caribouite. It has a color similar to charcoal and is very hard. The pure form of calcium carbide has a crystalline structure like other minerals such as quartz and agate. However, it can be manufactured by heating calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with high temperature and pressure in an electric furnace or gas-fired kiln for several hours until the mixture attains melting point.
