Market Overview:

The global carbon black feedstock (CBFS) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for carbon black and fuel oil across the globe. Additionally, the growing automotive industry is also expected to drive the growth of this market during the forecast period. On basis of type, high BMCI CBFS is projected to account for a larger share of the global CBFS market during 2018-2030. This can be attributed to its superior properties as compared with general type CBFS.

Global Carbon Black Feedstock (CBFS) Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

CBFS is a term used to describe the feedstock used in the production of carbon black. The most common type of CBFS is petroleum coke, which is a by-product of oil refining. Other types of CBFS include coal tar and natural gas.

High BMCI CBFS:

BMCI CBFS is Carbon Black Feedstock (CBFS) used in the production of Polymer Dispersions (PD). BMCI CBFS has a high amount of carbon content, which makes it black in color. It is produced by thermal cracking process and its yield depends on temperature and pressure applied during the process.

General Type CBFS:

General Type CBFS is a coal-based fluid slurry which contains high amount of carbon content. It is produced by washing and grinding of lignite or sub-bituminous coals, i.e., below 70% bitumen (C5+). The washed coal is then passed through a series of tanks containing different chemicals to remove impurities present in it. This process also helps in the separation of liquid from solid particles present in the feedstock.

Application Insights:

The fuel oil application segment led the global market in 2017. The product is widely used as a refinerystock material for the production of various petrochemical products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Carbon blacks are also utilized directly in the gas turbine engines of ships and aircrafts to improve their overall performance.

Carbon blacks are increasingly being utilized as an alternative to heavy crude oil in petroleum refining applications owing to their higher energy content per unit weight compared with other crude oils. They can be used alone or blended with other refinerystocks such as residuum from distillation units or lighter hydrocarbons from catalytic reforming units depending upon specific requirements of end-use industries.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The presence of key carbon black manufacturers such as Nippon Carbon Co., Ltd.; SINOPEC; Sinopec Group; PetroChina Corporation; and Mocal Energy Group, Inc. has fueled regional growth. In addition, increasing automotive production in countries such as China, India, Japan and Korea is anticipated to drive product demand over the next eight years.

North America accounted for a significant share of revenue owing to high fuel consumption in transportation coupled with growing environmental regulations regarding carbon emissions from vehicles that are likely to propel product demand from 2018 to 2030  time frame Fuel oil application segment was estimated at USD X million in 2017 and is projected grow at an estimated CAGR of XX% during the forecast period which can be attributed primarilyto rising petroleum refining activities across North America Countries including U.S.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for CBFS in the automotive and construction industries due to its properties such as high thermal stability, low volatility, and resistance to heat and chemicals.
  • Growing popularity of CBFS as a carbon source for manufacturing activated carbon which is used in water treatment, air purification, food processing, and other industrial applications.
  • Rising demand from the medical sector for use of CBFS in drug development and manufacturing processes.
  • Increasing use of CBFS as a precursor material for producing graphene-based products with superior electrical conductivity properties.
